About a month too early here…most seasons open November 1st.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I definitely will NOT be setting 200 traps. I have in the past, but now I'll happily run 20 traps.

Same here on trap numbers

Fine line between semi and hvy grade and freeze up and more work trapping under ice w every yr a bit different for snow and freeze up. No RTL's around here too so some places gotta get gear out early due to competition. We had a big 12 year argument w govt from '97 - 2009 to get long hair moved from Oct 15 to Nov 1. Too many idiots wanted to trap crap long hair fur cause a bit easier to trap in Oct and govt ppl just so ignorant but we won in the end. Was a big problem w no RTL's and lots of competition. I lead the charge on that one and takes a toll on ur head fighting stupid cause stupid can not be fixed.

With RTL its not really an issue when season opens.
Many years ago they moved fox to sept 15 start in the north from Oct 25-Cause guys wanted to use the dirthole set before freeze up.Very flat skins at that time but good colour.Good colour at that time trumped hvy skins. That market did not last however, but they left the season as is.(in southern Ontario fox has always been open year round because they are a pest).
No one I know takes fox before 25 oct when other land fur opens, and most wait until November to trap land fur, except maybe marten which prime up pretty early here.
With RTL harvesting early fur, overharvestin or underharvesting only hurts yourself and your lines.

Several of our seasons start around the 3rd. Saturday in October, such as northern rat and mink with 3 zones each about a week apart. Coon and canine start on the 3rd Saturday in Oct as well. Beaver and otter seasons have later starts or have in the past. Our early coon season was a department ADC season for coon when prices were moderate, let alone today. But that is free for our citizens.
I can remember even back when the market for blue coon was decent, many stated wait until the fur is prime so I typically started about 2 weeks before our 9- day gun season and there were many fewer coons to catch and many buyers had already filled their orders and they just speculated for the most part on better fur, which is why back then I started shipping fur. However the best way to get a bigger fur check was to start early and catch all you could. A lot easier running a coon line October 26th then November 15th here in WI.

Pretty much year round here, except for mink, muskrat, and otter. ADC guys can still get them all year, but the fur trappers can get after them in November.

Year round over most of the south with no closed on beaver and coyote and now raccoon in some areas. But fur only really starts once deer season closes even though seasons start back in November.
