Last year I could have counted what was on my black walnut trees on two hands. This year they are full to the point where branches are breaking off. To be honest, I don't now what to do with them all

Well I just heard they make a great cover scent for deer hunting. I was told that you get them while they are still green. Place them In bucket of water. You will have to put something over the top to get them to sink. Leave for 24 hours then pour the water through some cheese cloth and then put In a spray bottle.
They tell me you can spray down your clothes and use It In your blind.
Haven't tired It yet but It might work

Don't worry, the squirrels know what to do with them.... grin

Black walnuts are very flavorful, but the extraction process is a pain in the butt,.....

Aint that the truth gcs . a couple of years back I spent hours cracking the things using my workshop vice. First I put them in a 55 gal barrel with water and using a metal paint stirrer on a drill, I got rid of the husks, Then dried the nuts and finally cracked them using the vice. It was a lot of work and time spent for not much volume in return. Not doing that again on that sort of scale .... call me lazy

Here's the nut cracker I use. The G. Gardner Master Nut Cracker. It works very well. I can literally crack a black walnut with a pinkie finger when using it.

You can store black walnuts for 9 years in the shell, without loss of flavor and nutritional value. They are a great high protein and high fat emergency food. They are very good in chocolate brownies.

Keith I bet you have one of the original pig castrators in with all your equipment. You sure do have an impressive inventory of useful tools.

They are still made in Missouri.

There's a lot of knockoffs. A friend of mine bought a knockoff and it works too, though it's not as well made.

I bought mine used, at auction.

Thanks Bob. I don't have any true pig castrators, but I have a lot of tools made from prehistoric times, through the Middle Ages, the Revolutionary War time period, the Civil War period, to now, that would work in a pinch.

I have pretty massive collections of Native American stone tools, antique axes, antique hatchets and meat cleavers.

Diane has a large number of spinning wheels, looms and carders.

I have this style nutcracker and use this Garden Weasel Steel Nut Gatherer. Kids have a great time getting them up. They can pick about 1000 + in an hour.

There are places that buy them. I think they pick the nuts for some people with no sense of taste apparently sick then sell the hulls crushed for "sand" blasting media. Would not be surprised if they sold the hulls for something as well.

Met a guy that used an older worn out Rock Chucker reloading press to bust nuts, worked pretty good.

I smash the husks off between two rocks, while the nuts are still greenish. I then cage the black walnuts and powerwash all the remaining husk and goop off of them

The roller basket type nut traps work well in the open. In tall weeds, debris and brush, they work poorly. My friend James took some 1" wire mesh and attached it to tent poles, to make a tool to pickup up walnuts. The wire is bent to a hand size, cup shape and left long on the ends. To pick the nuts up, you just lightly tap the walnuts, in the husks. They stick to the tool and you just lightly tap the tool on your bucket to drop the nuts in the bucket. You can also scoop the nuts with the tool. I have a lot of walnut trees in my fence lines. With the wire tools I can easily reach through the fences, which are mostly fallen over and pick up the nuts.

If the nuts are touching on the ground, you can pick up a few with each tap.

Keith
