Anyone know what they really good for ? The dish tech guy got me buy one awhile ago , so I have cycle from power co. For Central air . It has not cycle in 3 summers . So I turn air on after work before . Ran an quit . I thought something wrong . Went down furnace an unscrew fuse cpl times an made sound inside furnace like unscrew lite bulb from socket with power in bulb . Auto Pilot off in furnace an flicker an made noise an Back on ..main breaker box ok. Went out central air an red lite on for appliance cycle so no air on . It went off automatically from power co . They do that rarely in peak power usage . Work fine. Everything good blower motor fan in furnace ok work ..I ask what suge protecters do in power outage ? I did t like the sound in furnace by auto pilot lite area or around there it made when absent Monday unscrew fuse on furnace to to see if lite went out or if bad fuse. Could unscrew a fuse on furnace cause a surge in power an damage something ? Auto Pilot lite flicker an sound like unscrew lite bulb with current in it. I seen tech do it once to try get furnace to act up to see what was wrong . Blower motor in furnace work fine now, anyone know if unscrew fuse on furnace with power flicker, 220. Can damage something I guess when screw an unscrew fuse. It make contact an then no contact . Is that Surge in power ?

It is you so I have to ask, did you pay the electric bill?

I have nothing clever to put here.

so I understood almost nothing of that , but

a surge protector simply shunts or passes voltage well in excess of the standard running voltage to ground.

think of it like an electrical dump valve if the pressure gets too high. voltage would be the electrical equivalent to pressure , if the voltage gets too high a surge protector dumps the excess to ground.

current is like the volume of water or air that is used or available

Voltage is like the pressure of a line

if you think of it something like an air tool a lot of pressure with a little volume spins the tool but not well under load for any length of time.

if your lucky a surge protector is never needed

if you unlucky and a high voltage surge like that from a transformer blowing at the end of the block or a near by lightning strike then if the surge protector did it's job your electrical device that is plugged into it gets no damage.

a direct lightning strike everything is generally still cooked unless you have the very expensive lightning arrestors used on radio antennas.

as for the air conditioning having anything to do with the surge protector , you lost me.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Ok a surge protector is for a storm with lighting . I guess unscrew a fuse on furnace an screw in with pilot lite flicker on an off an sound like screw lite bulb in socket noise that has power in socket. Won't hurt nothing. It not a power surge. It just power on an off a few times . While screw in fuse . Anyhow I just rember after incident of quit work. I turn thermostat switch to off. Between heat an cool. So there was no singal to central air an none to furnace while unscrew an screw in fuse . Only thing probly had current much in furnace when unscrew an screw in fuse was auto pilot lite an furnace blower motor . Unscrew fuse an screw in was make contact an not contact a few times until fuse Tite. Similar to power outage if flicker. Power on an off . I have appliance repair protection plan for furnace but not air cond an other appliances cover . If they can find parts . Had no trouble furnace in long time but had lot parts on it

Don't think I've ever heard of anyone running a surge protector for appliances . Most uses are pretty much restricted to compute equipment and telephone lines.

Personally I would run a surge protector with battery backup for computers because hard shutdowns caused by power outages can potentially damage the computer/software. That extra time given let's you shutdown the computer properly.

Watch a u tube vid of replace a screw in fuse in furnace. He say in vid, make sure power off when replace fuse ? Wonder why ? The switch on thermostat was off position between furnace an AC.whole unscrew fuse. I rember furnace tech guy years ago get furnace to turn on an off troubleshooting by unscrew an screw in fuse while furnace was run

Your central air should be 220 so you would have to unscrew 2 fuses.
