Reminds me of how a few guys back in WWII strapped a bunch of bazookas to spotter planes to attack tanks columns grin

Every time i come across the A 10 Warthog gun ship topic.Originaly called " Puff The Magic Dragon" during the Viet Nam era. Brings me back to conversations with a " local" who got to come home. He like clock work always brought up the times that ship entered their grids air space then the congs radio traffic would get chaotic as (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman).

Puff was an AC-47

The A10 did not come into existence until the late 1970's if I recall

The C-130 gunship was designated SPECTRE.

Good book on this subject is GHOSTRIDERS by William Walter

I worked with a guy who had been a Puff Crew Chief.

they got the only confirmed elephant kills or that was his claim maybe some one else got some also probably not widely publicized.

Vietcong were using elephants to haul fuel barrels and munitions

they got their orders went into that pirouette and all the mini guns opened up , the explosions and flames confirmed they were indeed hauling fuel and munitions

as far as the sky warden I think it is a great idea , should have one in Iraq and Afghanistan assigned to nearly every unit never more than minutes away.

I think it could have saved a lot of lives

Probably a good close support platform but still pretty vulnerable to even old tech like a stinger I would think

There is a program on the Smithsonian channel called Air power and it had a episode on the ac 130 gunship. Pretty neat and the fire power it can lay down is awesome. It can just circle its target and get a problem fixed in a hurry.

The new warthogs are something special, from the way they are talking them up! The old first ones were just a fantastic platform, and if the new ones are actually that much better, be a no brainer! Either way, I’m glad they kept them!

A fairly economical way to implement air/land battle doctrine when the enemy can only employ the land aspect.
