Does anyone know the correct size nut to pound onto the top of a 3/8" re-rod instead of welding on a washer for a stop?

Are you staking through a terminal box swivel? I would use a 5/8ths nut on that 3/8ths rod.
Another thing you could do would be to buy some 3/8ths cable clamps and use them instead of nuts.

5/8's is the wrench size, the thread size is how they'll be listed, would be 3/8 x 16. 3/8 's Is the thread OD, and 3/8 re-rod will be slightly smaller so the rod will drive into the nut and leave room to hammer it down tight.

I think a 3/8ths nut would slip right through a common box swivel if that's what he's using at the end of his chain.

The outside diameter of a 3/8" bolt or threaded rod is 3/8" (.375") The inside diameter of the 3/8" - 16 nut that fits on a 3/8" bolt is approx. 5/16" so the 3/8" rerod will not fit inside it. You will need a bigger nut.

A 7/16" nut has a minor diameter of 3/8" so even that will be a tight fit on 3/8" rerod.

A 1/2" nut has a minor diameter of .408" so that will fit over the 3/8" rerod but will still be a fairly snug fit.

Well the wrench size for a 3/8ths nut Is 9/16ths.
I just went out and tried It you would have to have really big hammer to dive a 3/8ths nut on to a 3/8ths piece of 3 /8ths re bar. Maybe if you sharpened the end It might work.
I will back down On using a 5/8ths nut you should use a 1/2" nut wrench size 3/4" the 3/8ths re bar fits through with a bit of slop and wouldn't take much to flatten It out .

I've looked at the fastener charts online and considered all of the possiblities.

Have some concrete work to help out on the next 2-3 days so will try to get to it over the weekend.

I use an oversized nut, slip it on the rebar and pound it tight with a large hammer. Then weld the top.

A 7/16 nut (nut that will screw onto a 7/16 bolt) can be hammered onto a 3/8" rebar. It helps to round off the end of the rebar a little before placing the nut on. I then hammer the nut on about 3/4 of the way onto the rebar, then weld into the center of the nut.

I made about 3-4 dozen 3/8 inch rebar stakes for my DPs that I use with a double stake system. I found a nut that slid on quite easily and then just welded to the top of the stake. I use a vice grip to twist them and pull them out so I don't even remember what wrench or thread size they were. I just went what fit well and worket with a quick spot weld.

Not sure the OP was thinking about welding.

He did not want to weld on a washer, but he could still weld on a nut. I would trust a weld before I wouid hammering a nut on.

true but you can peen the end of the rerod over and crimp the nut a little

Several years ago, I cut a bunch of 24-inch 3/8s rebar for stakes. It was winter and I had the time. Since I didn’t own a welder, I bought a threader and cut threads on the top half inch or so of the rod. Then it was a matter of putting on a thick washer, twisting on a 3/8 inch nut and after the first whack or two, the nuts stayed on forever. It was a lot of work but I’m still using them.

That's the way to do It. And It only takes a few swings with the hammer.

No I don't have a welder or I would weld in place. Teacher, that certainly will work and all I would need is a 3/8" die.

I may need to get a friend to weld on some washers. I like to use S hooks for attachment. Don't think the 3/8" nuts are large enough in point to point diameter to reliably keep the hooks from slipping off.
