How shallow are your holes?
I guess I wouldn’t know if mine are gone or not, my holes are pretty deep.
Are you seeing it lying around or can just see down the hole and see it’s not there?

I’ve never used anything but bait down a hole. Sheep’s wool, or anything else, is just some extra junk I gotta carry and extra steps I gotta take. Every second counts, I got a lot of miles to cover.

I am with Bob. Never use anything down a Dirt or punch hole but lure or bait. Most fibrous materials will get pulled out by rodents, birds and other wildlife too many times to bother with it.

You won't miss it. More hassle and problems than it's worth. Just another thing to carry.

Might try using a stick with a barb on it to push it down hole, then twist it to lock it down there.

I use It In the late season dirt holes and flat sets. Never had any problems with mice at that time of the year.
That oily sheep wool resits freezing and gives off that sheep smell. Used as a lure holder In a pipe set works pretty good.
I keep some In zip lock bag and use it In different applications. It takes up no room In your pocket.
Dipped In lure and placed In dog proof works good. Score up the trigger and It's just about Impossible to pull out of the trap.

But When I trapped In the south you couldn't keep It In the set.

I use "medical grade" scarps in dogproof. It is trimmed to 1/2 inch long. That way there is no shallow catches from pulling on long strands. This is wool on the hide

I stopped using sheep’s wool, I found something that works much better in my neck of the woods. I have a hookup with a pet groomer. All I use now is dog and cat trimmings.

I put my bait in sheep's wool and shove it to the bottom of a 12in hole.If a coyote of fox wants it they are going to have to work for it.Never had a problem with only with ants.
