Corn stubble, sure. Standing stubble or chisel-plowed, all good, lots of prey. Why?

Up here it's usually soybeans or corn but yes we do.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Out here it’s alfalfa hay fields. Definitely one of my favorite locations for coyotes

I’m still wondering about the thread starter’s question because they haven’t responded since asking and I feel it was an odd question! Set on sign wherever you find it and have permission to do so, end of story! I mean what’s the deal with corn stubble vs any other field that coyotes hunt & travel?

Almost never see coyote sign in corn fields yet they get caught there. Make sure the farmers aren't coming through with a plow when you set traps there. No kiddin??! Whether the stubble is standing or has been chisel plowed (usually chisel plowed when I got to the fields) there is a lot of rodent prey and where there’s prey around me, there are coyotes up here! Unplowed corn stubble is seemingly made for walk-thru sets and I love it but rarely beat the plow!! Besides the abundance of prey issue, in a crop-dominant country with 40-80 acre fields the coyotes have to use some field edges for travel-ways, makes no difference if the harvested crop ground has been plowed or not, corn, beans, or beets, makes no difference when coyotes need to travel from point A to point B, C, D, etc!!! Set on sign!

That's not really sign the way most people express it. One of the reasons I don't like the phrase. OK, what is coyote “sign” to you and most people?

That's not really sign the way most people express it. One of the reasons I don't like the phrase. OK, what is coyote “sign” to you and most people? Tracks, droppings, trails, kick backs, diggings, hair in fence/crawl inders ...basically any physical leavings that a coyote has been there. Field edges, rock piles, brush piles, roads, irrigation ditches, fences or anything that draws an animal to them are features. If I only set on sign where I'm at, primarily livestock farms/hay fields, I wouldn't set many coyote traps. You'll almost never find a coyote track unless it's it's been a wet season and a coyote happens to come across a bare patch of dirt or it snows Droppings are about as bad to find here as well as most farms are sub 100 acres and a big farm might be 500 acres here so we are dealing with one family group and whatever dispersing/transient coyotes move through.

Apparently, my territory allows me to find “sign” in some manner if the coyotes are there with more diligence on some properties than others. If coyotes are using a property, in most cases, very, very, few properties can’t I find “sign” as you described in your 1st two sentences any time of the year. I’d never have been able to test lures & baits if I couldn’t find sign and “set on it” test or set traps! I still don’t understand why you and others don’t like the phrase “setting on sign”, maybe I spend more time searching for sign than other folks, maybe I understand inherent behaviors better than most folks, or maybe it’s just easy for some and hard for others! Nevertheless, I’ll continue using the phrase “set on sign” since I’m not the one being upset by it and I’m sure some folks understands what it means!
