I was there last year. It was a very nice area. That end of the island is a desert and there is only one road out, if it gets blocked nobody gets out. Its hard to imagine what the island is like until you are there. One side of the island is literal rain forest the other side desert with mountain sides that consist of nothing but acres of dead grass and dried up brush. And it is some RUGGED country. Most of the towns are situated between the main road and the ocean where the land is relatively flat.

Not long after we were there last year that mountain side of dead grass burned. It really is a wonder that something like this had not happened sooner.

I lived on an island that was devastated by a hurricane in 2004 (Isabel). We had no road, no electricity, no phones, no water, and no crime. The island was essentially shut down to everyone except owners and insurance adjusters. The army brought use ice on barges, plus huge generators, food services, and heavy equipment. Portable showers were provided. Beer was on the first supply delivery. Even bicycles were delivered for anyone who needed to borrow one.
