I saw that and it sounds like a personal grudge might be involved. And on the surface a thousand mile away the optics aren't good. Abusive overreach is what it looks like but that seems to be what's in the air these days.

They may paint a little different picture than what it looks like like from here surprisingly

"Unlawful acts concerning computers", wow, that's about as open-ended as a semi-tuck is long!!

I suspect that the local newspaper guy stumbled into someone's favorite protected asset of some sort. Somebody in Kansas government doesn't want certain things found out...

You know any of the folks involved? Some local background would certainly help.

All I can see from here is some sort of allegation that a reporter got wind of some supposedly private legal matter that may have broken a state law in how it was obtained. Then the full force of local law enforcement was dropped onto a local newspaper to do a full deep dive fishing expedition for what amounts to a big so what.

What am I missing? Unless this is personal I can't see the why.

Judge says that a probable cause affidavit does not exist?

Oh boy! So, no written record of what the officer seeking the warrant swore to and she issued the search warrant for? She better line her ducks up soon.

I think you probably nailed it. I am sure the newspaper is probably controlled by a liberal owner who probably has 20 others in Kansas. The paper was asked to leave the business because the owner knew they were there to write about and try to make the Republican congressman look bad or ask stupid questions. The newspaper obtained dirt on the business owner and published it. Maybe broke the rules on how they got 15 year old facts. If this is what happen, I hope they throw the book at them. My daily paper does the same crap.

It's Marion most everyone knows each other. The news paper and its few employees are very liberal (cnbc wannabes) in a conservative community. The vast amount of the residents don't care for them, the opinions and what they print. Might be a little of personal reasons in the actions of the law enforcement but it's kind of like poking the bull, you do it long enough your going to get the horns and the editor of the paper has been pokingfor a long time with a very sharp stick. They are a victim of their own actions in my opinion. Most everyone here is sick of how the paper has attacked and twist everyone and everything they've reported on. Them being very liberal and the community being very conservative has caused a lot of dislike between the two parties. Knowing the police and sheriff department and court system here I doubt they acted without cause and I hope they find the proof they are after. Doubt the KBI would take a part in a local affair either if their wasn't probable cause.

Surprised that a lib paper makes money in a conservative town.

Me too. I think by the size of the paper and the size of the staff they have to be struggling. Sometimes I think they stick around out of spite.

Maybe Soros is funding them. Lol

Well it is bound to come to this. I'm kind of torn here as turnabout is fair play but as a constitutional conservative the use of government power scares me no matter who's ox is getting gored.

So steamroll the libs and spank the hands of the cops I guess but it's ugly either way.

So how do they stay in business if no one likes them?

Most of these small town papers are owned by big corporations, very few local independent owned papers any more. The news is controlled on a scale few realize.

If they broke the law, and knowing the local law enforcement, county attorney and Judge my guess is they likely did, justice will be served. We are a pretty patient and tolerant community top to bottom

Being a small community and still relying on a paper more so than larger commities and them being the only paper I guess..... The editor is only part owner so maybe some larger liberal group owns the other part and keep them going to stir the pot....???

Considering that most of us are only hearing of this through the media allies of this local newspaper I'm sure it has a slant to it though.

My understanding is a 2014 Ks law makes it so it doesn't have to be released. Looks like it was misreported that there isn't one when when in actuality it should have been reported it wasn't released.

Yes, and thats a law that should be repealed.

We have about the same thing going in our county. Local paper owner is at odds with the sheriff’s office and a few others. The paper owner “left” a recording device on after a county commissioners meeting and got the sheriff, county commissioner and a couple others jawing about what a pain the paper owner is and how they should just dig a hole and put him and his son in it. The state attorney general did an investigation and determined no laws had been broken by the sheriff. One of the county commissioners (we have three) resigned. The sheriff won’t resign as he would lose his tax payer paid attorney if he is not in office. It’s been on national news also.

Every small town paper I know of is owned by a liberal group.
McCook NE paper has a JuCo "teacher" that printed "anybody that doesn't have a 4 year college degree has no business participating in any discussion ". Never will forget that one
