If using the top of the bar as cutting side then it値l push the powerhead away from the log and you値l be very close to the moving chain. Seems mighty dangerous IMO. My only experience is with an Alaskan mill

Yep. I always cut with the bottom of my bar. Was wondering if milling was different.

What type of mill do you intend to use?

How much cutting do you plan? You can buy a Woodland mill for appro $2000, they are out of Ontario and the mill is a better way to saw logs.

I'd like to saw lots but in reality not much. A few corral planks and some bridge planks. Maybe some new decking on my goose neck trailer. All I've got planed for now but yes if a guy gets right into it I will look at one of those bandsaw mills.

It looks like you will have over $1000 w /chainsaw mill. I would spent the extra $$ and have a real mill.

I wasn't sawing lumber, I was milling logs. This one is probably close to a forty footer. I milled these their entire length.

Well I'm a little disappointed. Thought the saw was a stihl 088 but turns out it is a husqvarna 181 SE. It still a good sized saw at 80cc. Seems to run good and fairly torqy. $570 canuck pesos for saw, 20" and 24" bar and Alaskan mill. Don't think it's to bad of a deal. Figure to get some practice in with it before I tackle my first big project. I found a Tamarack tree that I'm gonna guess to be 24"+ at the stump that'll make good trailer deck planks.

He doesn't know what he's doing. Use the bottom. I've got a logosol 2 ms 391s and 2 ms 661s with 20 inch bars. All of them work great.

Spike ,I think it's pretty hard to beat those stihl's. I've got 3 the biggest is the 038 which I think is comparable to your 391. Great saw. This 181 I picked up is the first husqy I've had. I think its a little smaller the your 661. I think it should work good in this mill I got. I couldn't find a rip chain in town. Hoping a chisel tooth chain will work.

Run good oil and lots of it. I ate up a bar on a 391 in short order running a chisel bit chain and just the stock oiler on the saw. Probably should have turned the oiler up all the way and stopped the saw every half tank or so of gas and filled up on oil and it would have maybe saved my bar. Doesn't seem as bad with a rip chain, but I haven't tried one without the oiler turned up. I run used motor a lot for bar oil when I am cutting firewood, but if you are milling you are money ahead to buy good bar oil.

You need to use a ripping chain. The lumber comes out smooth. If you use a chisel bit it comes out rough. The chain has a tendency to grab the wood and it rips more than cuts. Just type in "ripping chains" in Google and there are a few choices.

I used a Husqvarna 460 Rancher to mill my cabin logs. Just 60cc but it did a fine job. They make a good saw.

Good to know that I won't be underpowered.

Well this saw is a beast. Tried it out on a white poplar I cut down in the cow pasture with the chain it came with. It didn't cut the way I figured but that wasn't due to lack of power but the chain might be the issue. After 5-10 mins of sawing on its side it will stall. I'm supposing it is a fuel pickup problem. Any ideas?

Just a update. I picked up a board bandit bandsaw mill yesterday. The price was right but it's got a seized engine. I figure I should be able to put a pto hydraulic pump off my tractor to run it. I must say that I'm pretty excited about this. Lol
