I have last years Bobcat in my freezer. Looking for ideas on how to turn into bait. Nothing major as I don't have much in the way of baitmaking supplies.

Thanks

If you are fairly new at making bait?
I would suggest purchasing a bait making solution, from one of the fine lure makers on this forum!! Follow their instructions!!
This is what I did several years ago and it was a good bait.

Mark has a fantastic idea! Do you have the entire carcass in the freezer or just the amount of meat that you cut off it?

I have the entire carcass. Just looked at Dobbins solution and it looks like a good start. Now I am new to trapping (3years) 1st year used cages and never knew there were so many possums in a square mile. Second and third MB550 and a couple Dukes. Thought I would use the Bobcat carcass in the freezer rather than waste it. However what I am really looking for is a good Bobcat bait. Any suggestions? The skunky solution sort of appeals to me but I am open to any suggestions.

Sounds to me like you're teetering on the edge of the rabbit hole... Be careful what you get into, lol. I'm nowhere near as far into this lure making thing as many on here are, but both my feet are firmly planted deep within this rabbit hole! If you're looking for a bobcat bait, I would take into consideration a few factors... what you know they eat in your area and what you know they like. There are many publications out there that list ingredients and what they are attractive to. There are several places online where you can get ingredients for lure making, but I'd caution you to get them from a trapper. A lure maker that's a successful trapper shouldn't have products that are cut so thinly that they only resemble the mother material in name only. At the risk of omitting one, I won't mention any, but it won't take too long searching on here to figure out which sources have quality products, and using quality product is a HUGE asset.

Here's a copy of a post I made back in 2008 or 2009, that may be of some help to you.

Also the meat may be mice, beaver, cat, groundhog, muskrat, rabbit, ect... You're only limited by your imagination but this will give you an idea what is involved and give you a look at bait making step by step.

1. This is one gallon of meat base diced into 1" pieces. I removed all the guts, fur, and head then diced the rest bones and all. (There are no bones over 1" long)...

[Linked Image]

2. I then put the lid on this bucket and set this bucket inside a 5 gal. bucket with a lid on it. I made 4 pinholes in the lid of the 5 gal. bucket to allow gases to escape but to keep flies out. (it is very important to never let flies get into the bait) I set the bucket outside in the sun for a few days to reach a medium level of taint. At that point it looked like this...

3. *I poured the meat into the 5 gal. bucket for easier mixing. I then mixed one pint sodium benzoate (preservative) with warm water til it was dissolved and added it along with a pint propylene glycol or glyceryn (anti-freeze), some beaver castor and some muskrat glands and a few other "secret" things like that to the meat base and stirred it well.

*instead of step #3 above you could just order a pint of Dobbins Bait Solution, add it to the gallon of meat and go on to step #4.

4. I replaced the lid on the bucket and moved it to a cool place. I will stir it once or twice weekly for two weeks or so to allow complete permeation and intermingling of the ingredients.

Here it is after two weeks...

5. You can then jar it up and it's good to store any place out of direct sunlight.

I hope this gives you some ideas to try your own concoction. If you do let me know how it works.

To really simplify it, you could preserve the meat add a little glycerin for anti-freeze and mix in one of your favorite cat lures and/or a bottle of Backbreaker.

Even simpler yet, just chunk it up and use the fresh chunks in your dirtholes. Keep it frozen until you wanna use it. You can chunk it and lay the chunks on board, or similar, covered with waxed paper in your freezer. Freeze them solid, then divide them into freezer bags so you can just grab a bag when you go to set traps. ... since you are dealing with a relatively small quantity.

WOW,! thanks for the information. I am teetering alright. I may try the dobbins but diving in may have to wait until next season as I have so much going on. I am going to research this bait making situation. I am still new at trapping and have asked tons of questions, read every article I can find and watched many video's. I have a list of the basics I must master before I start new projects. I will soon be time for me to experiment in the woods. Thanks for the feedback.

This I can do and hopefully after I have solved some of the other nuances I can get into this in more depth.
