Ok, I’m not a professional hog trapper or hog hunter, but I think I’ve found a somewhat “cheap” hog bait. Some may have already figured it out and I realize all hogs are different like coyotes so mileage may vary.

So’s prior to surgery I had read about burying corn. Take post hole diggers or even a shovel if the ground is soft enough. So I did just that. I used post hole diggers to dig down and 12-18” and filled the hole with corn and piled the dirt back on top. I took the remaining corn and widely scattered it so they’d have plenty to munch on and not just annihilate the hole.

I need the hogs to stick around long enough for me to leave my house once they show up on camera. Then get through the gates in the dark and park within a few hundred yards. Then on top of that I still have anywhere from a 200-400yd walk…and this was prior to surgery with a bad hip.

So anyways it worked and I made a couple of kills prior to surgery. My son and I went back out and did the same thing right before surgery to see if anymore would show up. Now here’s the part that I think is what’s attracting them. When we went to dig, we uncovered rotted corn and maggots. Rotted corn reeks as it is, but buried and uncovered it really stinks. On top of that with all the maggots I’m guessing they’re getting all the carbs and protein they want.

Once a few kills are made at a site the pigs shy away from that area for a while. Last week my son went back and out and scattered peanuts for the deer. Since the pigs left the deer have moved back in feeding.

Well the past few nights a sow had been showing up feeding for about 10-15 minutes then leaving and later a young boar came in and did the same. It didn’t look like anything was left of the peanuts or old corn was left and I was curious if the pigs would ever smell or touch the buried corn.

Apparently last night was the night. The same sow and a large boar came in at 2153 and didn’t leave until 0036.
Then the young boar came in at 0145 and didn’t leave until the sow came back at 0213 until 0307.
After she left again a sounder showed up at 0330 and stayed until 0530.
Then the young boar showed back up right after they left and stayed until 0716.

All that was left was the hole of corn that I’m assuming was rotted and filled with maggots again, couldn’t see any other food visible on camera. Unfortunately it will be tomorrow before I have someone going out to feed for me, but we have a heck of hole to fill up and fill in, lol.

Here’s a few pics…

And yes, the pigs ran off the coyotes that only stayed about 15min before the pigs showed. Figured someone would recognize the Tower Stand from the coyote post.

Did you ever think about trapping them in a large corral trap, so they are confined and waiting for you to shoot them when you get there?

I use to fill a bucket 1/2 way with corn and top it off with water. Let it sit in the sun for a couple days then bury it. It worked well in the Texas sun.

Put a container of KoolAid powder on soaked corn...then pour into that hole. Works even better.

Yes, we have one. When we first got it we were catching pigs left and right. Hogs are smart, now unless it’s a young group with no adults it works. If there’s an adult, it’s useless. Trapping works best around Jan-March when there’s not a lot to eat.
Here’s an example…these were coming in nightly and I had the manager move the hog cam there. Once he moved that camera, they haven’t been back. Any change and they’re gone.

Soak the corn in diesel and scatter it around. I wouldn’t put an ounce of energy into digging holes and burrying it.

Then you have deer, coons, crows, possums, turkeys, squirrels eating it all before the hogs ever find it. And if they do find it......it won't last near as long exposed. Yep...even with fuel on it.

Interesting. I just had a pretty good conversation with a guy yesterday that baits them here and soaks it in diesel. Says nothing touches it except the hogs. I took his word for it.

Same experience with me on sour corn. Heard other animals wouldnt eat it. Imagine my dismay when I had coons, deer, and turkeys in it. Dont know if diesel soaked corn would be different or not
