My question is i would like to try Dobbins' Bait Solution this year and my original thought process was to use deer meat however i do not want to wait until October to get a deer down to start trying to taint the meat. I would think i would be more successful starting now while its hot outside. I do have some wild pig quarters in the freezer that no one in my house is in a hurry to eat. I am curious if anyone has an opinion on feral pig meat for bait , again with the Dobbins' Bait Solution. If i was in Texas i would just give it a go because i am sure coyotes eat a fair amount of piglets down there, but we do not have many pigs in my neck of the woods in Oklahoma... Thoughts/ opinions?

Many police and sheriffs departments keep a list of people to notify of road kill deer to collect. If you get on your local list, you likely will have a deer in a few days or less.

I'd try the pig but other options maybe you can get. Not sure what critters are in your area. Here we use woodchuck, squirrels, mice, rabbits,etc....
I've used cheap whole chickens ground with bait solution. Also ask a few farms to see if they have a dead horse, cow, or sheep

Most of the attraction will be in the bait solution. Deer or horse seem to be at the top of the list when you are talking about the attraction of the base. Pork is toward the lower end.

good idea however...I know the sheriff and work at the courthouse ...quite honestly no one cares if a deer is on the road dead let alone reporting it or removing it... it will be pretty much gone in a day or two between the buzzards and coyotes. if i were to get one like that i would just would have to happen upon it .

Since you know the sheriff, I would just ask if he could notify the deputies at the shift briefing meetings, that you need a deer, put your name and number on the board and have them call you when they see a fresh one. It should be no big deal for them.

I've never tried it but have been told several times pork does not make good bait, coons don't either, I'm told.

Roadkill. If it is anything like around here you ought to be able to pick one up fairly fresh. (much nicer to grind fresh meat and THEN let it taint) within a few days if you keep your eyes open on the way to and from work.

I prefer horse or beaver. Be careful using deer, make sure you know your local laws. Here you would be fined for using deer meat as bait, as it is illegal to render any edible portion of a game animal unfit for human consumption, whether willfully or through negligence.

If you know any ranchers or farmers ask around and see if anyone has an old/lame horse that needs put down. I’ve heard pork isn’t a good bait but I’ve never tried it. I’ve had some success with bobcat
