I just placed a small order for some fruit trees from Yellow River Nursery in Wisconsin. They had a wide variety of fruit and apple trees that I like to plant for the deer. Even better, they are CHEAP! I only ordered 40, not knowing what sort of company this is. I took a picture of a hand written note and attached it to an email and sent it off to them. Scott answered me back (after 7 pm on a Sunday evening!) with a typed invoice including taxes and shipping in a matter of minutes. With that kind of response I have high hopes for this company and hope to place a much larger order for 2025.

I thought so. There are always posts in here in the winter about where to order trees so I thought I would share. Even with my small order of 40 trees they were less than $5 each shipped.

Rob, I suspect you will not be getting apples for several years. Fence around the trees as the deer will eat the limbs down to the trunk. Trust me, I know. Wishing you the best of luck.

Thank you Gary. I have around 300 trees now and keep adding more each year. I like deer that are too fat to run and grouse too fat to fly. I cage them and mulch them but in the past, mice have been my worst enemy over the winter. If I can catch the girdled saplings early in the spring, I wrap the damaged area in freezer or painters tape and have had fantastic success with that.

160 user I have the rodent problem here too and put down a layer of crushed stone for a 4 foot diameter barrier around them. that seems to keep the small guys away but rabbits still hit them and I do have deer fencing but the bears still get through that. Cant eliminate all problems. AND I did see 4 young grouse here this last week, have not heard a grouse in years and seee usually less than 3 or 4 in a year......jk

That is fantastic! It looks like we have a bumper crop of grouse here this year too. I appreciate the stone idea and I haven't tried that. I am not sure it is practical for what I am doing. The bulk of my trees get planted in the woods in small groups for pollination. The deer have altered their travel patterns and now go from group to group picking apples. The grouse tend to congregate near the apple trees too. I have started to get "volunteer" apples now from the squirrels burying them and stuff. It is cheap entertainment I guess.

I am excited to get them and see what they look like. Some of my trees from last year had 18-24 inches of growth this summer even with the drought.

Dang, I might make an order myself, can’t beat that price. I only have 4 apples, 4 plums, two cherries and a peach here so far. Two of the apples, the peach, and two plums all bore fruit this year for the first time since I planted them as saplings 6 years ago, the others I just planted this year.

I don’t have any problems with rodents or deer. The toughest thing about growing fruit here is the lack of water. You will not get fruit, or any tree for that matter, to grow here without irrigation for at least the first 5-10 years. After that they may get rooted deep enough to survive. I have all mine set up on automatic drip systems, they get watered every day during the heat of summer.

The second toughest thing about fruit is the late frosts. The weather turns nice, they bloom, and then it freezes. Our last frost this spring was June 20th.
