Was wondering if salmon carcasses would work for fisher/bobcat? I have access to Lake Ontario salmon and wasn’t sure if it’s a viable bait or not?

There are some guys in Alaska that do very good on marten using salmon heads for bait. Other than fish oil based lure I've not tried it here (we can't trap fisher here, but I've yet to find a lure/bait that attracts marten that doesn't attract fisher). I was quite surprised by how little interest I got in postholes prebaited with tainted or thoroughly rotten fish. One or two coyotes but less interest by any critters than any other bait/attractant I've tried. I once had multiple bears hitting a bait daily, and dumped about 75 cleaned crappie carcasses we had caught the day before on it. Figured that would really draw the bears from a long ways away. Every bear quit coming overnight and didnt come back the rest of the spring! I know fish is considered a good bait and I've seen it be very attractive other places, but here nothing seems to like it.

That's interesting

Completely different geography and critters here, but we dumped a pile fish that had been filleted with guts and all we got was buzzards on it. Thought for sure at least possums or coons, but nope.

Fatty type bait works well when the temps drop into the deep freeze.

A coworker of mine had trapped an RTL in northern Manitoba for a year and used fish guts in marten sets for bait. He didn’t crush the numbers but it worked.

Same here, every thing avoids it but the birds. I asked my great uncle, over 80 years old with 70 years of trapping experience, about using fresh fish for bait down here. He loves sardines for bait, hates using fresh fish. He said we have so much for a animal to eat year round why would it want some half rotten fish. I thought about that and it made sense. A coon can eat crawfish and crabs here year round, why would it want rotten fish? Up north I can see using fish as the cooler temperatures would keep it fresh and when winter sets in there is less for the animals to eat.

In my experience over the years fresher or mildly aged baits and lures have much better acceptance and interest overall. Thus avoiding the rolling instinct and lack of good interest.

I use the same baits early and in colder temperatures. If I feel the need for a little stronger odor presence due to the circumstances, I may use a bit stronger lure with a " touch " of skunk, civet odor or a shot of strong urine at a set..

Some get caught up in the Skunky is better thought process. I don't use much skunk if any in baits. It may take a while for some to understand this. Where food is available and average weather conditions prevail, it is always best to stay on the mild side of odor. When animals are less picky, and times aren't so good, just about anything will get a look. It you are near them they will find your sets.

I was camping up at Trappers Lake in Colorado a few years ago. Saw a marten or two running around and started putting Brookie and Cutthroat scraps up in the trees around camp. I enjoyed watching several marten going for those scraps.

Up here, I have ok luck with fresh/frozen salmon heads and scraps, but much better with beaver, deer trimmings, and waterfowl pieces, (skin, wings, heads, necks). This mainly for marten, wolverine, and ermine.
The salmon and herring I use mostly for mink, but change it out often.
As for fisher, I have taken 4 here. All with beaver meat.

Just doing what I want now.

Chum salmon ( dogfish ) was my go to bait, we would catch about 100 in early October and crib them with a tarp over it. By trapping season it would be fermented but not rotten. I use this for everything, marten, ermine, lynx, wolverine, fox, and wolves. Best thing I ever used and better than any lure I've ever used, unfortunately we haven't been able to fish for chums for two years now frown

I would go to the filleting stations at the marina when the salmon were really hitting about 9:00 am when the people were coming in. Most people were more than happy to give me all the fish heads I wanted. I would fill up up enough coolers in one day to last the whole season. Worked great in cages for raccoons.

The first marten I ever saw in the wild had a small Trout in his mouth. I trapped them with beaver and muskrat though. Had better responses.

Give an illegal alien a fish and he eats for a day. Deport him and you never have to feed him ever again!

I haven't used particularly salmon but on my Marten and fisher line about 1/3 to 1/2 of my sets are fish the others are baited with beaver.
