I have ave a bucket from last fall. Should I use them to dye some of my traps or use the longwood dye packet?

Horse chestnut and buckeye hulls work for dyeing fabric and yarn and should work on traps. I know they dye your hands good too. My brother, cousins and I shucked a bucket of them in our teens, that we collected in the park by our grandparents' house.

I don't know if American and Chinese chestnut hulls would work. They are not closely related to buckeyes and horse chestnuts. I have had little access to them to learn about them.

I think black walnut husks would work better than any of the above. That's what I have always used on my traps.

What kind of chestnut hulls do you have?

Keith

I don’t know about others but I have always been partial to local natural dyes not to mention there free for the taking so I would save the logwood for some time when your pressed for time

I've used black walnut hulls, sumac clusters (whatever they are called) and maple leaves all with good success.

I used hickory nut hulls once. It got the job done, but took a lot more that walnut hulls. Now I use sumac berries.

Oak leaves work as well.
