Years past in Alaska, end of August and early September was always a time for caribou harvest. Excellent time of year to be on the tundra as well. Here's a few photos of caribou hunts, usually fly-in.

This is our "pickup truck" we used to get into the caribou hills. A PA-18 Piper SuperCub.

Looks like a great hunt! So did you fly yourself in, or just ferried to a spot?

The photos are of many different hunts. We almost always flew ourselves, but one place in particular was a windy ridge where we didn't want our plane sitting all night. We had a buddy fly us in and drop us off. Pick us up a week later. Then, we'd do the same for him.

Some of the best meat I've ever been lucky to harvest. Great pictures, thanks for sharing. I was lucky enough to hunt in the Ungava Bay Territory of Quebec just before they shut the hunt down for good and harvest two beautiful caribou.

Great shots, Jack. And good subject.

I don't have a bou in art, but as soon as I do, it will be this one. This is last year's hunt with JR at the helm. He takes folks out into his areas to hunt, and this is his that he found. he gives me permission to use his photos. Can't wait to have the fun in duplicating those twists and turns of those antlers. Yesterday, he just left , to take a couple of guys out on this season's hunt as well. JR can sure find them.

An old friend of mine. It wasn't a bad landing, it was 60 mph winds that put it in the lake.

Posco -

Not a good thing on a caribou (or any other critter) hunt. Quite the photo...

Another beauty. Look at the extension sweep of those rear tines. I don't know the correct technical term, but you know what I mean. Beautiful big body, too. Thank you, Sir Ken.

It is said that caribou have the largest antler mass of all the others. Compared with head/body size. I sure have always been fascinated with how they curve and twist.

Alaska Peninsula, Ken. I remember flying commercial out of Anchorage to King Salmon and the entire plane was filled with hunters. Didn't that population plummet?

I'll bet that meat tasted great after a hunt like that. Thanks for posting.
