I got the wax and sand this spring, but totally missed the boat doing it the solar way this summer. I was at the thrift store today and saw a crock pot for $5 and thought maybe this might work. Mixed in 2 cups of granulated wax and set it on low. I’ll respond to this in a couple hours with how it turned out…

We need a thread on using the wifey's stuff ( not purposely bought at a thrift store ) for trapping needs.

All the non-trapping female non-members who lurk on this site would loose their minds.....lol

I threatened to use her vitamix blender to make mouse paste and she told me that the thrift store is cheaper than a divorce eek

She’s a good woman but I think that would be a bridge too far lmao

As long as it doesn't get hotter than 140 it will work, what can you make 1 to 1 1/2 gallon at a time?

Ok, it finally got wet all the way through, so I poured it out on a big garbage bag to cool. Getting close to seeing if this is gonna work and if the wax/sand mix is right…

Yeah, it’s gotta be about that. What happens above 140? Isn’t the wax hotter than that when you are dipping traps?

Ok, so here’s the results. If I grab a handful and squeeze really tight I get a little bit clumped up in the middle. Is this the right amount of wax or do I want more?

Your dirt or sand will get a burnt smell dirt for sure with the matter in it,you might be good with clean sand, dirt has plant matter in it some times that will burn when hotter than 140.

To answer your question, make a small pile and make a dimple in the top. Add water and let it sit that way and if it still completely holds the water 24hrs later, your mix is golden!

I make all my waxed dirt in a crock pot. Works great.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I found out what you mean today… I got a batch going and went over to Panhandle’s place, though I turned it to the lowest setting. Unfortunately it was the highest… came home to a hot smoky mess. Whoops. crazy
