Nessy…that is a total unique experience in life. I lived in a small cedar cabin a few feet away from a mountain lake for 15 years. The musical tones from that lake as it froze and thawed was amazing. I could even feel the vibrations from the shifts . There is nothing like it. You have to experience that to appreciate that

So true, anyone ice fishing in the north country will attest to that!,..Spent plenty a night in the fish house listening to the ice hollers.

I've spent more nights in the front seat of a Toyota pickup than any other way of camping. But I've spent my fair share on the ground, both with and without a tent. One night that will always stand out in my memory. I was bobcat hunting with the hounds up towards the Canadian border. Dogs went up the mountain and like an idiot I left the snowmobile without my snowshoes. The ground was so steep I had to pull myself up with brush and the snow was only a little over my knees under the trees there, so they were more hassle than not wearing them. By the time I got to the dogs treed, it was almost dark, and I had been hiking slash wallowing through shirtpocket deep snow for several hours, and had crossed the top of the mountain to find them treed on the other side. I quickly spotted the cat in the falling darkness and shot it with my pistol. It disappeared but didnt hit the ground. I couldn't spot it again but was pretty sure it was dead but hung up in the tree. In just a couple minutes it was completely dark. I wasn't leaving without the cat so I decided to build a fire and hump up for the night. Anybody have any idea how hard it is to find decent wood in shirt pocket deep snow in a hemlock patch, in the dark, when it is pouring the snow? I was soaked with sweat of course, so I did my best to keep a fire going and pull up a dog or two to help with staying warm. Pretty sure I stayed warmer from gathering wood than I did from my fire. That was a long night, and there was 14" of snow on my snowmobile when I got back to it the next day.

well, we have a camper [rv fifth wheel], and enjoy 100 plus days in it a year, but I also pitch a tent and camp while hunting and I also winter camp with a tarp and sleeping bag. Why is it people thing that if someone does something in a different way than they do its wrong?

My most memorable was with only one side of a 2man shelter half tent and the good ole USMC Arctic bag 50 Mile's north of the arctic circle in Norway in Feb during a deployment Teamwork 80 with AMTRAC's running all night. Will never forget that week. Think I'd of preferred the moose

Dad was my boy scout master. We camped quite a bit. Wasn't always pleasurable, but certainly memorable. As a kid, I learned camping could allow you to temporarily live next to a good fishing spot, a duck blind, a deer stand, etc. Effort required to transport/set up/take down/store gear was always viewed as something necessary to do properly, and never as work. "Work" has many definitions, but doesn't belong with camping, IMO.

Summer fish camping . . .

Good to have AC in the tent on those hot summer days.

Duck camp, a quick set up with a single pole lodge. Quick up, quick down.

Best pic. Dogs are long gone, little girl has grown up, and Susan and I have grown older.

As a kid growing up in WV we camped using tarps and Sleeping bags. The highlight was finding a soft rock to sleep on.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

Slept on the ground Friday and Saturday night. Did have a pillow though. No tent. Can’t see the stars. Woke up to this. [Linked Image]

That's a nice looking set up Ksnow!

I have a small tent for a back pack trip or kayaking night on a snadbar, an inexpensive med sized tent that can ride around under the back seat for emergencies, and a bigger tent for fish camp or a base of operations in 3 seasons.
