Looking at an old ford 4500 backhoe. Runs and operates. King pins are shot. some pins and holes are worn. needs a bunch of new hoses.
Are the transmissions any good? Not sure of the name of the trans but it has 10 forward gears and 2 reverse. Guy said u use the clutch to get moving then just move the lever through the gears.
Just looking for something to use around the property. He will deliver it. $2500

If it needs 1 hose, it might need them all.
Can get pricey ... quickly.

I had one hose made, locally.
Was $100, but needed to finish.

Replaced the rest from.ones I ordered from Surplus Center, about $20 a piece.

Yeah, hoses can get expensive. Hoping it will only need a coupe for now.

2500 bucks doesn't buy much these days. Worth a shot, worst case scenario you lose a thousand bucks reselling a broken backhoe.

Gear drive transmission should be reliable. Have a later model Ford backhoe with the torque converter tore up, and needs reverser rebuilt. Going to be about 3k with me doing the work.

Idk about the trans, but if hoses are the issue, should be able to replace them fairly efficiently. Like any plumbing, it's not the hose but the fittings that cost a bunch. Anyway that's how it is here. I'd say take a chance, but not my money. Everyone has a reason to sell something!

Did you run it? If it runs drives and digs it’s worth $2500. I would not change a hose that wasn’t leaking or frayed. Put only as much as you have to in it to do the work you need. A lot of those were 4 lever, ok when you get used to them.

yeah I ran it, everything works but when u curl the bucket a hose leaks bad. Its a select o speed transmission. Kinda automatic?

Loader too? If so I don’t know how you could go wrong for that money. I would think it would be worth that from a tractor salvage

I would try to buy a slightly newer backhoe. I like New Holland backhoes but not quite that old. We run a 655E New Holland backhoe. Roughly 25 years old.

Yeah loader too. Ill probably buy it. I was hoping someone would comment on the select o speed trans.
I would like a little newer one but prices are crazy high.
