I was just wondering,,,, are you allowed to keep a shark if you catch one??? Most fishing videos/shows I watch,,, they always turn them loose. I didn’t know if it was just simply catch and release,,, or if the regs state that sharks must be released

We normally fish inside the state waters of Florida in the Gulf and yes you can keep sharks. Think it’s like one from shore or two per boat. We may keep one every once in a while, but normally don’t want the hassle. Kids love catching them. Now most we catch are max 3ft maybe a 4ft every once in a while.

Used to catch and eat makos and hammerhead

I've done it in Floride, some you can keep, never landed one yet had them on but that's it.

Small one such as dog fish are good eating. In South East Asia we ate a lot of shark up to 100 pounds. Fun to fish for at nite when the squid are around in an open boat. 2 or 3 people hook up and walking all around the boat over and under each other. Good time, long time ago......jk

Lots of changes over regs in the past few decades. Shark was once pretty much unregulated to now receiving some degree of protection.

But the same could be said of many other saltwater species.

I love shark fishing! I only fish in Alabama but the size limit is 54" for most like black tips and bulls which is mainly what you catch in the surf or around rigs in the delta. Hammerhead is 70 something? Not sure as we only eat bull sharks. Nothing like the sound of that Penn start screaming at 2am when you have a 3lb bluefish as bait!!!

We have sharks everywhere now, right on the beaches mostly eating from the huge schools of bunkers, with an occasional surfer...whales too.

Like said different regs for different species, some species are closed. Been catching summer dogs in the crabpots, but the most disconcerting thing is a big one bumping you in the dark while seining spearing....

Most sharks you don't want to eat...the ammonia smell and taste from the urea is nasty, You need a shark with a rudimentary kidney system to excrete the urea....Mako's, Threshers, and white sharks. I think only the threshers are legal to keep now.

They can be a scourge when fishing for something else. Often times, in the gulf, you have to move to get away from them if you want to catch target fish species. Have had many a forty lb yellowfin tuna cut in half. Son hooked a 15lb blackfin one day - got it up to the boat and a five ft barracuda grabbed it and got hooked in the process. Fought it almost up to the boat and a ten ft hammerhead ate it - and also got hooked. He wanted to cut the line but I wanted bait back - he fought it for 45 min - got ten ft from boat and line broke. Should have cut it off

Up in Long Island sound the striper fisherman have a hard time getting one to the boat before it's bit in half, 30 pounders....
