well my son went and bought a hunting dog
my son 20 lives at my house , works full time and goes to school part time
he surprised us with a German wire hair puppy yesterday the dog was 8 weeks on Tuesday and he has the papers and everything is in order parents are AKC registered hunting dogs.
so I may be getting a little ahead on these questions but we are getting there soon enough
he got the dog from a co-worker who raises them and hunts them and does a litter every other year.
the co-worker/breeder said he would get him in touch with the trainer he uses.

After 6 hours of searching, calling for them and watching my little boy cry because he lost his pups, I decided the collars would be worth the money. I have the Garmin Alpha and really like it. I got it more for tracking than training but you can do them all with it. I have 2 squirrel dogs and in these mountains they can be really close but you can't see them to tell what they are getting into. I have since trained them both to start heading back if they venture out farther than I like. After about 300 yds, I just send a double beep to each collar and you can immediately see them turn and start cutting the distance. It also taught them very quickly that deer were a no-go. Pretty awesome tool but I have yet to learn even a small portion of all the functions.

Wife named him Fritz last night and he has a collar , kennel , food and such we aren't new to dogs or housebreaking and general around people training , this is the first hunting dog we have 2 others in the house. the Wife's chihuahua that is old and a great pyrenes husky mix that is a little over year.

Those shock dollars are a great tool. IMO they are not for puppies though. Once the pup is 8-10 months old, knows what he is expected to do when a command is given, a little touch up now again is great. Zapping one before it knows what you want , is a real bad idea.

You tone train the dog with these collars mostly.no need to shock unless it’s running to a road maybe chasing deer etc….. Exactly! We have the invisible fence system to keep them close to the house so they are used to electronic collars of some sort. Ironically, the tone on that system is identical to the one on the Alpha collars so all I have to do is issue a beep if they are doing something wrong. The only time I actually had to use the shock so far is to break them off deer. I thought it would be harder than it actually was. After the second time, they no longer want anything to do with a deer even if it jumps right up in front of them.

I hadn't given the shock collar much thought I have never used one
twice had dogs get away that took me a while to find them same day but no fun once chased a deer then found a house to go to, springer spaniel but not really much of a hunter we tried her a few times but she was mostly a house dog.
and the first time I took my German Shepard hunting , she was a pound dog already 5-7 years old when we got her, excellent dog , super gun shy she did great till I shot a rabbit that was when I found out she was gun shy
so I was thinking more GPS tracking , dogs aren't cheap

going to start taking this pup to the range early , some low noise 22lr shoot , feed piece of a treat , get him thinking shooting is a reward
any one have any other tricks to teach them to be not gun shy

100 yd .22 would be a good start but reward the pup with a verbal praise rather than a treat so he doesn't expect a treat every time, otherwise, if you shoot a bird, he will stay with you and not retrieve it. :-)

Knew a guy that did that, and when he stopped giving the treat, his blockhead dog would eat the game instead! LOL

IMO dogs are gun shy or they are not. Hounds its not a big deal when a 22 is used. I had my setter out playing fetch. Used a percussion black powder gun with caps only. Threw the ball, popped a cap and said dead bird. When I fired a shotgun over him the first time he never even looked at me.

I've seen dogs refuse to budge the minute a collar was strapped on them. The owner didn't take the time to let the dog get accustomed to the collar and started zapping it right out of the chute. Everything with dogs is association. He knew that meant pain. Give the pooch a few days before you light him up, and when you do, start low and let the dog decide what amount of pain it's willing to tolerate.
