I personally know two millionaires that had an 8th grade education. I occasionally day wage for one. He inherited about 300 acres and maybe 40 head of cattle is all. Only 2/3 of the original place is worth a darn.
He built the place up to a couple sections and started a back hoe and dozer biz and then eventually started a 2nd biz that rentals all manner of equipment small to large A to Z.

Lots of reasons blacks have lower graduation rates. Race isn't one of them. Its culture. Some self-imposed, and some imposed by Government Programs. But me mentioning that somehow makes me a racist...

Don’t think the Coast Guard accepts a high school dropout, and maybe not a GED. Might have changed due to enlistment needs.
Just Googled. Said high school diploma required for CG enlistment.

Socio-economic factors exist in the South. Lots of low income kids raised by a grandmother. No father in their lives. This presents an uphill climb for children in this situation. This is a cultural problem.

Dad had an 8th grade education. He did get a GED later in life. He did well.

As far as our Vets, they are our Hero's, each and every one of them. If you aren't a Vet get your Dad's or Gpa's DD214 and join your local Legion Post. Ain't no better way to spend time then sittin talkin with a Vet.

I'm a white man that was raised by great parents and only graduated high school, and I am married to a black woman that was valedictorian and a college degree, she did this all while being raised by a single mother that was a drug addict, so I don't have much sympathy for anyone that uses their circumstances as an excuse. If you want something out of life you gotta work for it. Race has nothing to do with it. I will add that I own my own business and make more than my wife. Education can be overrated Right on!

A huge number of todays high school graduates couldn't do what was considered 8th grade work 50 years ago
