I seem to remember a thread on stretching coon square on here before. Anyone have any tips or better yet historical paper on how it’s done?

Just skin like a bearhide without feet and stretch accordingly..

When I was growing up in the ozarks you would see them tacked to barns and sheds all over the country side.

Wetdog puts some up that way. I always thought they looked pretty good.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

The last time I saw them was when I was buying fur in 1978.
The old guy was pretty cheap with his nails too.

It was in the 1970's when I last saw them stretched square.
Fur dealer I worked with bought a bunch out of Kansas .
Was the first time I saw how big the coon were from out that way.

If you've ever seen the Frisco RR emblem, that came from a coon hide that the owner saw nailed to a barn. He thought that was a neat shape, so he used it for his railroad.

When groney buys green coon he just slits the coon up the middle stretches It out square and uses the fleshing machine. Then he wraps It around a coon board and drys it. I wonder If he would buy green skinned coon that way. Never tried It but would It be easier to skin one open Instead of cased? I was down To FHA one time and I saw lots of put up coyotes skinned and dried like that.

There was a trapper from western Washington - Emil Rosselli (sp?) - that put up square coon. But he used plenty of nails. Those pelts were perfectly square. Even the front edge was straight and he didn’t accomplish that by trimming off the nose.

His raccoon pelts were masterpieces. Wish I would have saved one.
