I also cut my teeth on Victor #3 dls, and a few #3 Newhouse. Mid to late 1970's, and coyotes were worth a LOT of money, then.

Just doing what I want now.

1 1/2 Duke DJ (back when it was just a dent in the top of the jaw), bubble welded jaw tips and welded j-hooks. Just had to carry pliers to straighten dogs back out. They weren't set for coyote specifically but held them just fine. I used a simple dirthole by pounding and reaming with a rebar stake, hardly any backing. Caught coyotes, red fox, coons, badgers, skunks, pretty much everything that came by. Thank goodness I found out on the internet that they won't work for that.

Jake traps get my vote and still use them doing fur or ADC.

Northwoods #2 coils that I baseplated and round stock laminated. Caught a lot of coyotes in 1.75 Victors that I modified. People said why would you use such a small trap? Pan size was plenty big and I have never seen a coyotes foot that wouldn't fit in a 1.75.

I like duke #2 rj. Simple, inexpensive, and when bedded properly make for a perfect pad catch. Also, very strong springs.
