I bought a cva scout 45-70 for deer hunting. It came with a box of Hornady leverloution 325 gr. Rounds that I ran through just to get used to it, I got about an inch at 50 yds just shooting off of sandbags.
I plan to get a lead sled to shoot it off of to sight it in better, and will be using it for deer hunting at less than 100 yds.
Just wondering what kind of ammo is going to be the most accurate. I know I'm not expecting it to be a tack driver but the ammo is too expensive to screw around and find out what shoots the best.
if those are available just buy some more 1 inch at 50 is 2-3 at 100 and that is plenty good for smacking deer all day long
everyone seems all hung up on a sub MOA gun those days , when I was a kid they thought a 3inch group at 100 yards was a great deer rifle in 30-06 or similar
I like to chase it in a handload from time to time , but in a factory load if your doing an inch at 50 , that is going to put meat on the table.
what you can find and that it is decent and consistent is what maters
I wouldn't waste time or money on a lead sled , a 1/2 inch at 50 yards on a sled won't make deer any deader but you getting to shooting well off hand standing will.
I would spend the time making you better with quick shooting standing or from a chair , however your going to be in the stand or walking around stalking.
when my son was12 I would put up 5 targets 1,2,3,4,5 labeled big with a marker all the targets were paper plates stapled on cardboard they were varying distances from about 25 yards on the range to about 80 both left and right we would start walking just like he would be hunting , 3-4 steps pause and look around , 3-4 steps pause look around
I would holler out a number and he had to take aim and shoot it just generally the middle anything on the plate counted as a hit , he wanted to be the middle of the middle at first , told him any where in that is lung and will make meat so if you hit the middle of the middle is not important this isn't target shooting , this is hunting shooting be about the middle but as fast as you can insure a hit.
he got mad when I told him "no shot" the deer hopped away put your safety back on you took to long and I worked that time down , and down got to where about 4 seconds was a long time. about 2-3 seconds or less he could pull up and have a shot off and be in the plate at 25-50 yards
well he humored me but didn't like it much , then the last drive of deer season when he was 12 a doe came running at him he saw her coming she had no more than stopped having seen him when he dropped her through both shoulders .
then he got , he was all smiles and he thanked me for making him shoot fast at the range he understood there is a time for precise and a time for good enough
it time matters more than the middle of the middle deer was only about 30 yards
actually fast forward to today he is 20 and he was just at a steel challenge match 6 targets varying distances in 4 seconds all hits
skip the lead sled bags are way more than good enough and spend that $ on ammo and try off had shooting , kneeling , sitting , get out the 22lr and spend time shooting award positions, walking stopping and shooting
keep it safe but don't practice the same stance or distance all the time
