FWIW, my friend's temple has a hosted bar in the foyer; gin and tonic anyone? That caught me a little by surprise when I visited.
I went to hear a special guest speaker, a physicist who was speaking on the age of the earth. I thought I had already heard all of the young earth, and old earth arguments before. But this guys outlook was mind blowing, never heard anything like it.
Of course I had to put on a bennie before going into the sanctuary, but the livey back and forth discussions were interesting and somewhat surprising.
I'll bet the lively and animated discussions 2000 years ago were very similar.
