What is a decent GPS unit to use. Don't some of them have an aerial photo as a display on the screen? Thinking of buying one for travel and hunting. I'll be off-line until later this P.M. Thanks in advance!

The GPS I use is a Garmin GPSMAP 64st. It used to be fantastic. Now, its hit and miss, due to the U.S. not upkeeping the civilian navigational satellites. Its a solid little unit that has taken a beating over the years. Now I use it as backup and my primary is onX for my phone.

Even my boat GPS units are not as accurate as they used to be due to the satellite situation.

Garmin I have the Dakota 20 (discontinued) it does downloadable Arial views you have to have a subscription to download and it only has so much memory but I downloaded my most hunted areas and they fit on the sim card

it has a very basic road map otherwise in memory

good unit for me I purchased in about 2014 I would stand next to a trap, tag it with a way point and be able to get back to it easily

deer hunting I could tag a blood trail and follow it

I have tried OnX in 2021 and it is really nice if you have cell signal very user friendly some annual expense for the subscrition but it updates maps as part of that.

what would be the best of both worlds is a blue tooth GPS unit that sent the info to your phone so you could use onx and easily label and share locations but have the much better accuracy of your GPS handheld vs needing cell signal

they make such devices I just haven't tried one I have so far made do with my little Dakota 20

You can download maps on Onx so you dont't need cell service. Gps still works without cell service. It is all I use now a days. Gps are obsolete for hunting.

I use a simple Etrex 20. It does everything I need it to do. The more complex features that a GPS contains, the slower it is to obtain satellites.

I love my old Garmin Montana 680. Does everything you need from a touchscreen but is simple enough even I can run it. Also takes photos and records the location of the photo so you can navigate back to the photo location, etc.

With OnX and other apps I don’t think I’ll ever own another GPS. Garmin’s were the go to in the past, not sure about now. I still have mine with old turkey spots in several states along with umpteen fishing locations on the flats in the Gulf.

I the phone has no issue with GPS and you can download the maps , yes try onx trial and a battery pack for your phone is alwasy handy , for traveling and such.

I had an old battery pack for my phone as a backup it had enough charge to get you a day, got my daughter one this summer for her trip abroad , for not a lot of money they have one the size of your phone that will hold enough juice to charge it 4 times.

Using your phone on airplane mode will extend your battery life to days instead of hours.

turning off wifi, and blue tooth will also help but let you get text messages and calls yet , handy when group hunting although I much prefer radios for group communication getting others on board with that is not as easy

Wifi searching for a connection can eat battery

No need for dedicated gps units now days. Phone will do it all. No use carrying more than you have to.

I have a 200i garmin dog system but I use the handheld for trapping as well as running the dogs or if I go into a place with no cell service the inreach that's built in is nice to have.
