Here is Opal, my new trapping partner according to the wife. We have been out in the canoe twice now and boy talk about different! What I would like advice is how do you others train your dogs to ride in a canoe? I tried a short piece of rope this time and tied it off both ways, gave her a little room to move. Then shortened it up and tied back with me so I could have a little more control over how much she moved in the canoe. It went ok but I think it is something we both have to get used to.

I never tied my dog into the canoe. I wanted him to be able swim away if we swamped it. We never did, but came close. He was pretty good as long as we weren't close to the bank or geese went swimming by. Eventually he learned how to ride in the canoe pretty well. I don't think cur was ever really made to sit still in a canoe though.

My Beagle would ride in our Canoe as a pup and he got real good as time went on. I would say your puppy just needs time to learn.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

It takes time for you and the dog to become one Grasshopper.

Mine would jump out of the boat into the cattails every time we got close. Eventually he learned that cattails usually aren't solid ground. It takes time but they will eventually pick up on things like that. Failure is a great teacher.

This was today's little journey. I was not liking the idea of the rope or chain that was told to me. I didn't use it the first time we went out, figured I'd try it this time since it's been a while since first time.

That looks great. Just needs some "seat" time. Good looking little buddy there.
