I have a pile of old honey bee boxes I was going to burn since the edges are rotting out. I was thinking of cutting them down to hold a 110 for some mink boxes. Does anyone think the smell would put them off? I plan on scraping them but bees make a sticky solution that is almost impossible to get out (propolis). I am thinking it should be cold enough that it would not be an issue. I could scorch the boxes to get rid of it and the wax residue but I think that would be worst than the stink.
I had some boxes I made from plywood but they are real heavy and too large for the 110’s. Plans would be nice but I figure I would just make a box that would fit the 110. Suggestions / lessons learned would be nice.

First off,use 120's or 1'5 LS if checking daily or cant drown.
One critical thing in mink trapping with boxes is to have your trap stabilized rock solid.
Narrow slots and two springs allows this without impeding the correct firing of the waxed trigger.
Other than that if you set where mink are funnelled to your bait (change it out regular to keep it fresh if trapping above freezing),screen the back and camo the box and the bait good those boxes should work fine.
I like partridge scraps and some fish oil early and a big chunk of beaver meat later after freezeup for bait.

They sold 1st cut log slabs at the lumber mills I would cut them them about 16 inches long then take 3 pieces and make cubbies that way. I’d trim the sides off of one piece then use that for the top, nail the sides to it and support the bottom of the sides with a 1X2. That allowed the trap to bed with a foot trap or slots could be cut if you use conis.

It looked like a log but the center was square and the traps fit and bed well and set nicely on shorelines and creek banks.

but what about using bee boxes? I could put them paint side in or out. box is about 16x22 so I can get 16" out of them. Mostly I do apples and get muskrats, and this lumber would be half the weight of the plywood (and my size was off).
I picked up some springs to make my 110's to 120's but it may have been better money to just get 120's.
Freeze up? Thats about two weekends? LOL.

My guess is that the smell won’t be an issue. Maybe they’ll even think it’s interesting but I’ve not had much luck using boxes. Ive got a bunch of old equipment that’s been torched inside from AFB days and I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t help but just mske them stinkier. I guess you could try a coat of paint but the propolis likely will just bleed thru. Maybe using some mouse nesting material inside woukd make good bait.

Might make them attractive to skunks but i don't think mink will care. You might also find a surprise swarm taking up residence during the off season.
