I have a big brother to it so to speak a .25-06 Remington , at the time it was a toss up between the .25-06 and a .257 Weatherby mag . A family member wanted me to have the .257 Roberts they first hunted with when I was a young kid but strange family dynamics suddenly got placed in the mix .
Sadly like some other great calibers it's fallen behind in the mix of new and so called improved calibers .

I had a Roberts back in the early 90s when I was young and stupid. It was a sportorized Japanese Mauser with a 3x9 Redfield on top. It would shoot factory loads topped with 119 g and 120 grain soft points in several brands with plenty of accuracy for whitetail and had enough power to flip them smooth over and that was big bodied deer up in Kansas.
A medically retired police officer who reloaded for cash worked up a load using the 80 grain Sierra boat tails type bullets that would basically thread a needle and stayed surprising true in the wind. The recoil was so mild you could watch the critters hit the ground through the scope and slow enough to hear the impact.
This is where the young and stupid comes in. I traded that rifle for something that I thought was more desirable and it was not. I predict that you will love your new purchase and I wouldn't worry about ammo too much. If your .257 shoots like mine did then after you get it sighted in a box of shells will last you 20 hunts.

In recent years Ruger did a run of .257 Roberts in their beautiful No. 1 single-shot rifle. I found one with a gorgeous walnut stock and snapped it up. There may be some still available.
I also have a No. 1 in the Robert's big brother, the .25-06, an older rifle with the red pad stock. Shoots 1.5" hundred-yard groups. which I consider tolerable fair.

I have a 1954 Winchester Model 70 in that caliber and also a custom Mauser in the same caliber. Pretty cool rifles with a lot of our old hunting camp history behind them.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I had a Kimber select in 257 that had gorgeous wood and shot 100gr Barnes very well. Killed one buck with it and sold it. It was too nice and I found I was leaving it in the safe in fear of scratching it.
I also had a custom Win M70 in 257 AI. It was a great shooter but ended up being too heavy to carry all day so ended up trading it for some other shiny object.
I love the 25 caliber and current have 4 rifles chambered. 2 25-06, 25-06AI and a 25-284.

If a guy could find a 257 bob, where would you get the ammo or brass to feed it? Not sure you can even find 7mm Mauser to make it.

I have one that has been in my family since the late 40s. It is a Remington Model 722. MY uncle traded my dad the rifle for an old car in the 50s. It is now my wifes rifle. It has killed elk, moose black bear, mule deer, whitetails and numerous predators. The old factory loads were under powered because it had to be safe in the rebarreled old jap rifles. I reload 115 to 120 grain partitions in it because of the heavier animals she hunts. It is a joy to shoot with no recoil. I haven't seen any factory loads for several years but I have brass for two lifetimes. I also have a Ruger in 257 that I bought for my daughter.

Hornady, federal, and Hendershots are three that come to mind. You might have to order it though. When L/M Fleet opened in Escanaba they carried the .257 rbts.ammo,I didn't buy any and when I went back a month or so later they were out and I haven't seen it there since.
