beaverpeeler OP trapper Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 11,796 Oregon	Been seeing these two white jakes the last few weeks with a local flock of wild turkeys. I think most of our wilds (introduced) are Rio Grands with a small mix of Merriam in there. A year or two ago there was a hen that was mostly white but with brown or grey speckles. My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

charles trapper C Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 11,144 Asheville, NC	I saw a hen in a large flock before the Spring opener, that was a cream color with a few tan colored wing and tail feathers. Saw her about five times. All the other birds were normal.

I think most of the wild turkey populations in the US have domestic turkey genetics in them, the same way coyote and wolf populations contain domestic dog genetics. When I was raising domestic turkeys, I had a lot of problems with wild turkeys coming in, agitating my toms, causing them to fight each other. It became so much of a problem, that I stopped raising turkeys. Once I saw a wild turkey fight a domestic turkey. When they squared off, I thought the wild turkey would tear up the domestic turkey, since ranging free should keep it in much better condition. The domestic turkey had it beaten, knocked down and on the run in half a minute. It was like watching Mike Tyson fight a feather weight. Keith

Then in other areas, as many as a half dozen white birds , and off color ones in a flock under 40 birds. I really don't know. I remember reading years ago , to shoot all white birds because it was bad for the wild population. The white birds were in just certain areas. Miles apart. lcd trapper L Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 446 TN	saw one adult hen years ago with regular wild colored hen. A big gobbler was following along about 100 yards behind them. The white hen was easy to tell she was a domestic hen from her larger body frame. She called the old gobbler right on in, and he was the first long beard I ever killed. Saw a wild hen years later that had one white chick and one regular colored one. The TWRA wants all white turkeys taken out of the flock, unlike white whitetail deer that are protected.

Farm country back then , lots of area between farms. They would show up again for a few days and be gone again. He finally butchered them when they came back home for the last time. Very seldom seen deer back then also, now they're everywhere unless you're hunting them. We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!
