I found these growing UNDER an Oak tree by my place in central MN. If they were on the side of a tree, I would have no issues eating them but not knowing much about mushrooms, I am skeptical about these. What are they and can I eat them without going into convulsions and having funeral services performed for me. They actually look and smell pretty good.

My guess is no but I don’t know what the mushroom is. They look similar to oysters but the gills don’t go down the stem as an oyster does. I found a patch like those squirrel hunting yesterday and the texture is very rubbery. I’d pass on them if it were me. Hopefully Tatiana will chime in

No.

Not safe.

They MAY be edible, but all terrestrial, whitish, flat-capped mushrooms with crowded decurrent gills are notoriously difficult to identify even to professional mycologists. I can't even say what genus these are from your pictures, because this is the case when smell, texture and density are also important clues for a good ID. Could be a species of Clitocybe, Lepista, Leucopaxillus, or something else. Clitocybe has several common and widespread species that are VERY poisonous and potentially deadly due to high muscarine content. Some whitish Lepista species contain gastrointestinal irritants.

Clitopilus, which is a good edible, is very similar, too, but it has pink spores, so if you put one on a piece of paper, gills down, it will leave a distinctly pink spore print, but from what I can see, it's not Clitopilus. Most other similar fungi have whitish spores. Still, I don't recommend collecting any such fungi unless an expert from your area, familiar with your local species, teaches you to identify specific species with absolute certainty, using several recognizable key features.

The reddening flesh is interesting, though.

OK, when in doubt, I'll toss them out. I have a lot of squirrels there and they aren't eating them so neither will I. I sure don't want to wind up like Trapstickman.

Even if they ARE store bought, I ain't eating them. That's one food I'll never have to worry about whether it's good, bad or other. They're all bad.
