Paw paws are a sub-tropical fruit that has adapted to the temperate zone. It's thought that humans spread them north over the millennia so that their native range now extends all the way up to Michigan.
The U. of Nebraska had an experimental orchard of paw paws that I visited in 1985. They were planted in full sun and doing great.
Carl, were the pawpaw trees planted in full sunlight, short and wide?

You got it. Very squatty plants...but they were only about 3 -4 years old when I saw them.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

shelf life on pawpaws is only a few days. I do freeze pulp for later use.
Is it hard to know when they are ready to be picked?
They take on a warm.yellowy color and have a slight dent to them. You usually have to shake.the tree here to get them. You shake it and if they fall there ripe, the green ones usually don't fall if you gently shake the tree.
They bruise easy so once harvested you gonna move em fade inl3sa you're making wine.
The turn black.like bananas
IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

My friend Don's pawpaw trees were likely the same variety. The mature trees ranged from 11 down to 4. The youngest mature trees came out of the mature ones. The fruit on the eleven year olds was easy to knock down with a fairly short stick still. The fruit tasted good, unlike all the other pawpaws I've tried.
When we first walked up on the trees, I thought they were a pawpaw relative, rather than pawpaws, until I saw the fruit. I suspect some of the fruit weighed well over a pound.

They grow well with black walnut trees. All the pawpaws we found were under black walnut trees. Thw have alot of walnut trees where we go,along the river.

If you're not finding them on the ground, they almost never are ripe if you shake em off the tree. Last trip I checked on my wild patches, I tried to shake some out but the ones that fell were all rock hard that was almost two weeks ago and they still have barely softened up.
