I'm coming to Kansas to deer hunt, I'm bringing some traps for a little coyote work, ....just wondering what soil is like, I use wolf fangs up here, and drags...will I be good there? any info appreciated, thx

Drags work but you need to pick your spots. Will need more stakes than drags. By a bunch. lots of trappers here use disposables.

No big issue getting most type of stakes/anchors to hold in most soils in KS. Rock can be a minor problem in my area but not a big enough issue to worry about. If your targeting coyotes I like to stay in mostly open country to stay away from deer, coons and possums. Never used drags but would be hesitant in the kind of country I trap coyotes in.

My drags have 8-10 foot of chain. If I use one its pre hooked. Not many places you can bury a drag here that its a good idea. Even in western states in heavy mesquite or oak brush a coyote can sometimes go a long ways. Deer season here the ground might be froze. Drag marks are not easy to find in this part of the world when its not froze. Almost impossible when it is.

You will. Be careful fleshing one. Easy to over scrape. A lot like skunks. If you want to tan one.

Could be sand or Rocky flint hills or black loam or red clay depending on where in KS my country way too open for drags I use disposable wolf fangs and trap in all the above except rocks --- as mentioned by others sand can b e tricky but doable

Also haven't seen or caught a possum in coyote sets for many years

A 12” or so superstake IMO is your best option in the open country. If your trapping in cattle country your gonna hit a rock sometimes and you have your perfect set but now you have 4 or so inches of cable sticking up to try and bend under the trap or just cut and redo.18” are great if your on the edge of a farm field with looney soil..if you trap frozen ground you have bigger problems chopping out a trap bed here. It really depends on where as the soil types I encounter difffer.to close to the woods you use a stake and you hit that nice root lol I like drags near the wood edges myself.

Keep in mind that the drought has been bad enough some areas that you might need a jack hammer to bed traps and if you are using a disposable you might be leaving the anchor in the ground unless you are willing to dig it out.

It seems about every video you see they have perfect dry dirt for sifting over your traps, no need for waxed dirt, antifeeeze or anything else. Coyotes seem dumb as bricks there too.
