Fall is the season of orb weavers - at least they are more visible at this time of year. One of the most visible is the brightly colored yellow garden spider.

The Yellow Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia, has many common names including writing spider, zig-zag spider, and zipper spider and is found throughout North America. They can often be found in yards and gardens where their large size and bright colors are easily spotted. These large arachnids are completely harmless and play an important part in the ecosystem as they eat a wide range of insects, including some rather large ones and some species we consider pests.

I’m familiar. My walk this morning not only gave me 10 minutes with the deer, I had to avoid numerous webs across the path.

Though I don’t normally care for spiders, this is another good informative video, Anthony. You make me chuckle …I think you can make the most leery and creepy crawly subject , almost fun

When I would ride horses in FLA orange and peach orchards , those spiders would routinely have webs spanning across the open lanes . I often wouldn’t see them until the last second. I’m sure I looked as if I was having a spaz attack trying to duck them as I rode those lanes. UGH.

Sharon - Thanks! While I love spiders I don't really care to walk into the webs and have the spiders plastered to my face - even though I know they aren't going to hurt me.

While squirrel hunting , I would watch close for webs across the paths in the woods.
Sometimes I would carry a branch stuck out in front of me to catch the webs first .
But those were different spiders , not easy to see like the banana spiders.

We used to call them banana spiders lol.

Now, I have to.find a UV light and head out tonight, lol

Ohio Wolverine - those smaller orb weavers that are hard to spot are mostly one of the several species in the genus Gasteracantha - the spiny orb weavers - or what most people call spiky butt spiders.

DaveP - it gets addictive looking for spiders with UV - and scorpions are really fun as they GLOW!

That's probably exactly what they were, all I know is as kids , my brother picked one off of himself , and it stung him bad.
Yes the bodies had sharp points on them.
His thumb swelled up really big.
So I didn't relish them getting on me at all.
