Bought and old backhoe and it needs a bunch of hoses. How to I figure out what size hose they are if the #s are faded off? Found some with 3/8 on them and one with 3/4. But one looks like its a little smaller than 3/4 but bigger than 1/2? Have not seen 5/8 for sale? Went to tractor supply and looked at hoses but maybe the outer layer are different thickness depending on the hose manufacture?
And now how do I figure out fittings? JIC? I see jic 4f and jic 6f, is that the thread pitch? I know what pipe thread is, guessing thats called NTP? And some have an o ring . Its a 1974 hoe so shouldnt be metric if they have that in fittings?
What psi? some listed 3000 and some 5000. Was going to go with 5000 unless thats not needed or recommended?

Go to a implement dealer, some shops make them bring the old hoses.

Hose and fittings are measured in sixteenth of an inch. number 10 is common on hoes. A drill bit inside hose tells you the size. JIc is easy to work with. Get an adapter or look up the specs. You can measure across threads to figure out sizes.

You are in PA, find an Amish hardware store that makes hoses. It will cost you a fraction of the price.

You need a hydraulic guy to come out and help you. To many questions to answer here. 3000 rated hose is plenty on that tractor. I doubt it's operating pressure is more that 1500 probably more like 1200. The 4f and 6f is likely the fitting size 4 being 1/4 inch and 6 being 3/8. Keep in mind the fitting size doesn't always match the hose size. You can have a 3/8 fitting on a 1/2 inch hose or vise versa

That’s what I do. I have an old Kubota backhoe that is constantly blowing hoses. I go to an Amish guy that runs a place called Fleetwood Farm Repair. I bring him the blown hose and he makes me one up identical for a fraction of the cost of a dealer or other parts supplier.

Eh...wot?

There are 5/8 hoses they’re odd but they’re out there in that case I would up it to 3/4 so it’s common, the 3000 is one wire and 5000 is two wire I mainly make stuff from one wire, the ends are tough to say without seeing them and having one in hand to do measurements, especially the jic if there’s numbers on the end itself you can look them up.

Lug, why do you go back to a guy that makes you hoses that keep blowing? Am I misunderstanding what you said?

The hoses he makes me haven't blown. At least not yet. Between the backhoe and loader bucket there are somewhere around thirty hoses on that machine. The original hoses are about twenty-five years old and those are the ones starting to degrade. I've probably replaced half the original hoses over the last four or five years.

He says the Kubota hoses are poor quality, the replacement hoses and fittings he uses are made in USA. I guess time will tell if they last.

Eh...wot?
