I'm looking for needles for a Singer 46K30 sewing machine. The paperwork that came with it says the size is 16x5. Hope that means something.

Susan says . . . . This looks like an industrial sewing machine. The question she has is what kind of materials are you going to be sewing? K probably means it was manufactured in Kilbowie, Scotland.

Susan says . . . The 16x5, or sometimes referenced as 5x16, is the actual needle size. For an old Singer sewing machine it is best to use Singer needles. The needle size you might want to look for are the 16/100, or it will say 100/16 on the packet. She is not sure what the five is referencing as this is an older industrial machine and the significance of that number may have been lost over the years.

When I made my blanket, I bought leather sewing needles in the appropriate size. They’re supposed to cut through the leather better than needles made for fabric. I’m sure some people on here will know much more than I do.

I have an industrial machine and can’t remember what size it takes, but that is an industrial size needle. Make sure you buy the needle that is meant for leather. There are several different point versions and the leather points have a triangle shape like a trokar point fish hook. Check a place called The Thread Exchange. That is where I buy mine.
