I think for the most part we as trappers try and do the right things when it comes to following the regulations. But there is always that one dude that didn't bother to read the regs or perhaps don't care.

The regs clearly states that............... In Units 11, 13, and 16 from Sept 25 - Nov 9, traps and snares must be
underwater.

A rule that makes sense to me given that duck season is in full swing.

So when I came across this set today in Unit 16, by the Robidoux Creek Bridge on the Parks, I was kinda baffled and then ticked. Brand new 330, 3 ft above the water line at a cross over.
I really wanted to leave a note but a pen and paper is not in my gear. Part of me really wanted to pop it but we all know that is not the right thing to do either. So we called the troopers.

The trooper we spoke to shouldn't have any problem finding that pink flagging tape, or maybe the dude will see this and correct the problem before the trooper gets to his gear.

It is stuff like this that gives ALL trappers a bad rap.

Be safe out there guys!

looks like the 330 is new so person heard the price of beaver is up and they were gonna make money. I really would not call them a trapper but a opportunist. Hope it costs them $ rather than the profits.

The rule is not about ducks or duck dogs. The rule , which is ludicrous and non-complyable where water levels change as much as 3 feet sometimes, is supposed to eliminate people trying to trap land animals before the season opens on Nov 10. Of course most nothing is even close to prime in September or October, but people will apparently try to trap land stuff that is closed. This was not a problem when all the seasons basically opened Nov 10.

it looks like a beaver set to me. Apparently, Troopers can’t make this judgement.

Well regardless why the rule was made setting a 330 on land 150 yds from a road on a creek that people duck hunt on is irresponsible IMO. And if that is the reason for the rule that individual was way outta the water on a crossover that looked like otter were using. Either way it had potential to create a negative action.

We sent those same pictures to the Trooper and he wanted to physically see it before he passed judgement.

I posted this same post on another forum and apparently the trapper saw it and pulled the set before the Trooper got to it.

Well i am glad the troopers did not have to get involved. We all have made errors in the field. What it looked like with the noticeable flagging. I would gather the person did not know about the regulation and was a very novice trapper. I personal always try to settle an issue i have had with other trappers or non-trapper, one on one before having to involve the brown shirts.
