There's lots of beaver trappers saving their castor right now.

So castor at FHA is not an auction item? You just place an order?

I read this post earlier today. Interesting the lack of comments. I did not have time to think about the post but at the time it kind of came off a little odd. I assume the post was meant to stimulate trappers to consign. That's my take on it anyway. I wish Mark had disclosed the price he PT the castor for. I want to comment only on what I have read on here about the castor market price but I guess I should also talk to fellas in the know.
My read is this: If prime steaks are $20 a pound and there is a sale on them for $10 a pound would that not cause more buyers to buy them? Also if I never tried prime steaks before in my restaurant and I could sell it to my customers as a special would I not buy some if the price is good ? If those prime steaks go up in price where I cannot afford to offer them on special I will not buy them.

How does the price get set, wonder I? If you can place orders PT they must already know what they're paying right?

In their Market Forecast 2024 they did mention what prices they were looking for on castor but I'm not sure when that was dated.
57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Good catch Lance.
The '24 forecast has #1 grade at $90, #2 at $45 and #3 for $20. SO..... when castor private treaties after the March sale, much of the volume likely already sold long before that right?
I'm just curious how all that works. Because of higher demand when do they decree the basis should rise over those forecast numbers?

When you sell something you ask what you want for it. I still sell castor locally to users at $8 an oz.No one has balked at that price yet.If they do I might negotiate, depending how much they wanted to by.I always offer a discount if people buy above a certain amount no matter what I am selling.Moreso if a certain thing is not moving fast enough. Im sure FHA will negotiate from their initial ask if demand is low.And raise it when demand is high to meet the market. Same as selling anything PT.

The auction house is not the place to sell castor. Plenty of private buyers out there without the commission and weight reduction. Agreed. But the last country sale I had for castor was @$45/lb.....and I've got darn nice castor.
