I have the Granite industrial. 15 years ago I invested about $5000 with stand new and tooling. I have made and repaired many things. When it says to use a wood cover to change the chuck it is to protect the bed surface. That can be damaged easily.

I enjoy it and am glad to have it in my shop!

I would not. Do some research. You are better off buying a mill and a lathe. You can get them used, in good shape, pretty cheap. Those combos are not very ridged, and you will have trouble holding tolerances if you are doing anything tricky. Look on HGR industrial located over in Ohio. They sell old equipment. If you don't know whet you are looking at, call a buddy that can help. You will be better off and happier in the long run.

They just aren't rigid enough to hold tolerance.
