It's very likely a variety of brush axe. I like it and don't have one like it.

Council Tools has made good quality axes for a long time, since 1886. They are quite collectible.

A Facebook friend of mine's son is one of the head honchos at Council Tools.

Make a good executioners axe.

Question for the ax guys. I've found several old axes with my metal detector. The blades on all looks like they wore them out. My question is do most axes even old have a Maker's Mark somewhere or were axes made by blacksmiths? Trying to figure out if I should try to electrolysis these

Less than half of axes have makers marks. A lot of old blacksmiths did mark the tools they made and are pretty well known. I have been able to find details about some of the old blacksmiths, who made axes I have, that were made from the later 1700s on.

I only like to minimally clean old axes and then oil them well with mineral oil. There's a fair number of guys that will take an old axe head back to like new condition, rehang it and use it. I like my antiques to look antique.

I have a great many axes, adzes, hatchets and cleavers. I want to make a really nice display with them during my convalescence.

There's some good, very active axe groups on Facebook. Some of the guys can take an old, beat up axe and make it look much better, without ruining the patina. Some of the guys are phenomenal at making replacement handles. The shared knowledge base is very impressive.

You're welcome. Some of the guys on Axe Addicts, Axe Restoration and Collecting, Axe Junkies and the Axe Market, all on Facebook, can probably identify what you found if you post pictures there. They could also tell you if you should clean them up or leave them alone.

There's a surprising number of axes that sell for well over $2000.00.

Now why didn't I know that? Here I thought I knew a thing or two about the turpentine trade. Learn something new every day. Thanks.

I wouldn't sell these. They belonged to my great grandfather or older. I'm hunting on old family area. Some folks think we have royalty in our blood and want to be paid for all my finds

I just looked at their website. It looks like Council Tools doesn't make the turpentine axes any more. It sounds like turpentine axes were what they first started making.

"Made in USA” is a phrase particularly significant. This means just what it says at Council Tool – and has, since 1886.

John Pickett Council began making tools for the turpentine harvesting industry in the late 1800s. Mr. Council was a farmer, woodsman and a “producer” of turpentine. A “producer” was one involved with harvesting turpentine for market. He began making tools because he was dissatisfied with the quality of tools available for purchase. Word spread about the value of the tools he handcrafted, and he subsequently found himself selling tools. The business was incorporated in 1886, and it’s been manufacturing hand tools of one type or another ever since.

Council Tool uses only American steel in our forgings, American hickory or fiberglass in our handles, and we use all domestically produced materials and supplies. Before we attach the “Made in USA” label, we make sure ours is a quality product in every respect, that it measures up to our standards, and that it is a product that will represent excellent value for the user."
