How many coyotes would it take to strip 1 150lb ram lamb to bones overnight? My guess is between 3 and 5, but would like some more input before I spend the night in the rain watching what is left (they will be back to the scene of the crime) so i know how many shells i need to have.. It was my daughters prize brown blueface leicester ram lamb - only one known to us in the U.S. I just hope it had a chance to breed the handful of ewes we put it with so we get a little of the genetics. This is the sort of stuff that makes you want to get a 9-5 job, move to the city, and pray for an early death.

That's a lot of eating, I would guess a larger pack than 5.

Also, don't be surprised if a pack of dogs show up. Unless they found an advantage on him, I'd think coyotes would stay clear of a ram

There wasn't even any hide left. I was guessing 2-3 days, but my daughter was looking for mushrooms in that pasture yesterday (small 4 acres) and it was in plain view. can't completely rule out dogs - I've seen alot of dog damage (most of our local ones are overfed and just prefer the chase) -- doesn't matter which in my eyes at this point. We had a family of coyotes kill a couple lambs earlier this year - (mom, dad, and 3 pups) one pup hit on road - one picked up in trap, only one pup surviving that I know of. I am not a great coyote trapper.

Ok I smell ya now. I thought you were talkin about feeding in a single night. Give 3 to 5 a couple of nights and they will have that carcus all but picked clean.

For what I am guessing that tam might have been worth, you should probably hire an ADC professional.

Don't some people buy Llamas or donkeys or something to put in with the sheep for protecting them from coyotes?

My daughter says it was in a single night - but I haven't personally been to that pasture in about 3 days. I am not used to the hide even being gone in our neck of the woods -- I mean even facial skin and ears gone. I am going to call one of my locals who does more coyote trapping than I do -- hope he has time.

Jayme a good Jenny will stomp a mud hole in a coyotes (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). Especially if they mess with anything she has been herded up with. A boss mare is just as good but I know nothing of lamas. I doubt they could be all that effective.

Coyotes do sometimes cache meat. They dig shallow holes and regurgitate the chewed meat into them.

I had a beagle named Horse, which was short for Workhorse, who was excellent at finding cached meat. I sold him for what i thought was a ridiculous amount of money and years later, still regret doing so.

We had llamas for a while -- they got old -- and when I had to wait for the coyote to walk past the llama so I didn't shoot it in the scope onenight - i decided that llamas weren't that great. I haven't lost any sheep to coyotes in probably 7 years, but this makes #3 this year --- plus 1 chewed on a little.

When I only had 1 llama and it was young it did a great job. when I got a female and it got older it could care less about the sheep. I watched one time a jogger come by on the road in front of our house - with dog. the dog decided that running up and down the fenceline would be a good time. the llama kept up with that dog (step for step) even with a dividing fence in the middle of the llamas pasture. to bad it got old.

Have you tried livestock guardian dogs. I have 4 and they work very well.

My cousin had guardian dogs - his problem with them was that they didn't know "which" sheep were theirs to gaurd. I don't need my dog harassing the neighbors.

Female lion with a couple offspring will certainly do that overnight.

When they are dedicated to feeding on a carcass, they will chew bone vigorously.

They are excellent at skinning their prey as well.
