What country originally claimed the land that is now called Gaza?

My understanding is that the Jewish people were given that land after WW1 as a safe settlement area. Is that correct?

In 1917, in order to win Jewish support for Britain's First World War effort, the British Balfour Declaration promised the establishment of a Jewish national home in Ottoman-controlled Palestine.

However, the British had also promised Arab nationalists that a united Arab country, covering most of the Arab Middle East, would result if the Ottoman Turks were defeated.

When the fighting ended in 1918, with the Ottoman Empire defeated on every front, neither promise was delivered.

True, the land was given to the Jewish after the war. Why, I honestly don't know. There was maybe 10% of the population Jewish at the time. They then brought over all these foreigners and gave them the land, and displacing the Palestinians in the process. Imagine that. A bit like the British themselves did here in Ireland.

Maybe they had a God given right to do that too?
