Alexa says an Amtrak in New England runs 150 mph.
Sounds fast to me. ????

I find that hard to believe, a lot of the track in the northeast is old and curvy, and that, and speed is a bad combination . Maybe a few sections can handle it?, Maybe Boco knows.....

This is from Amtrak,

Quote
The Acela Express is the fastest train in the Western Hemi-
sphere, with a maximum speed of 150 mph (241 kph) over
current infrastructure on two sections of its route between
Boston and New Haven (35 total miles). Its top speed between
New York City and Washington, D.C., is 135 mph (217 kph).

But AVERAGE speed is pokey, lol

I think I saw where half their trains can hit 100.

Train speed is dependent on track geometry and defects.
You cant have high speed passenger trains run on the same track as a freight train
Superelevation on curves among other things like length of spirals degree of curve etc would have too much difference for one or the other.

Hmmm? Amtrak and freight trains run on the same tracks every day here. I was passed by the Amtrak doing about 70 mph, I don't believe they push it much faster than that around here.

In western NE a number of yrs ago an excavator was tearing down an old grain elevator by the tracks. He swung across the tracks without looking just as an Amtrack came along. Ruined everybody's day.

I think the fastest train in the US is the Government Gravy Train. And, it's headed to receivership quickly!

Correct, you can slow down a passenger train to run on track that will accommodate freight.
The compromise is track geometry, slow the passenger trins and accept more railwear from the freight.
70 mph is not high speed train.
There are not many high speed trains in NA because track is configured mainly for freight.
True high speed trains like in Europe run on their own track exclusive of freight train traffic.

I took the Amtrak Wolverine out of Chicago to Pontiac,Mi. and we hit speeds of over 100 mph on one stretch. It was Amtraks own track on that stretch of track. Made up some lost time and came in a little early to Pontiac.

I took many high speed rail trains in China and road the Bullet Train numerous times, the Bullet Train went 215mph. Beijing to Shanghai in about 4 hrs on the high speed.
