I don’t if the official name of a castor mound 8-10 feet wide is a mega mound but I was wondering how you would set something like that.It would take a lot of blocking or would it be better to move down the bank to a small mound or maybe make your own a few feet away? Thanks in advance for anyone chiming in.

I'm no beaver expert but I would put some drowning rods and a few 330.

Never had luck setting on mounds the beaver made. Better off to make your own or set chokepoints that lead to it.

What if you make your own right on it? Size of a softball with some black dirt to stand out?

You can get away with any kind of disturbance you want to that giant mound to create a place to catch a beaver.
It will come to investigate the strange smelling caster and be really torqued of at whatever beaver messed up his spot.

If I were setting this location. I'd put some foreign castor where the blue arrow points. I'd dig short trenches 8" wide and 6-10" deep, where the green has them marked out, and hang snares where the red circles are with the bottom of the 8-9" loop just under water and 4" off the bottom of the trench. I'd make more of them same along the edges further down or on the other side in the water's edge if there is sign of a crawl out anywhere. That may be all wrong, but it's how I'd do it.

That'll work. Footholds at those locations is also an option providing there is sufficient water for drowning.

It appears you may not be able to stand in that area and you may need to set it up by boat/canoe. I would prefer to foot hold to drown the beaver and keep them out of sight or use conibear the sets.

Prep your sets with some eye appeal sloped slides with traps set accordingly. I don't like using snares in some situations particularly if you may have a multiple catch situation. Too much tear up and set recovery after a catch and anchoring out there may be a problem.

Most any kind of castor will be different likely then what is already there. If the castor lure fizzles out with its effectiveness, go with blind or channel sets, trail sets or change to a curiosity scent.

Call me what you want LOL but when I see a beaver mound in the fall (anytime before/after spring) I use sac oil to simulate another beaver - neither threatening or seeking one of its kind. Through my experience the oil will catch me old, kits, teenagers, spooky females etc., etc... This is Ag land supreme - no timber except on a river. Castor can't be beat when the ice comes out (beaver food for us here is corn so a lure with wintergreen or spearmint etc., is only fair) but other times of the year, oil works for me without the coon/rat incidentals. My take............................... the mike

Any of you beaver experts notice them bulldozing straight to the castor following the wind and getting caught going back into the water on your trail? I have seen evidence of this when I started paying attention to trap placement on their foot and wondered about it.

When I can get a 330 legally in front of a castor mound I made, almost always they are caught going back into the water.

Not much of an otter trapper, we have very few here but....I'll bet they will visit and play on that mound.
Good luck!

Super simple set up 2 or 3 footholds with drowning rigs ans lennons beaver lure directly in front of them you got yourself multiple beavers.
