I asked my dad once what was it about my mother that attracted him to her. His honest to god answer was he was outside one day and far off the the distance heard a woman calling hogs. Followed the voice until he found her, which was over a mile away. He said he decided anyone who could call hogs from that far off had to be a winner and was the right women for him. Don't think that was it exactly, but that is what he told me.

Cattle call was a high pitched........waaaahhhh (wah) oak.

Hog call was the same, except it was a soooooo (sue) oak.

Apparently those calls were family tradition handed down on my mother's side. Seems strange now but never questioned it then.

Current call for chickens is "hey you chickie guys". Origin was when oldest grandson was a little kid, he would refer to the chickens as "chickie guys". So we have stayed with it and they will come running when you call them.

"Come boss"! Was what was used on our farm when I was kid. We no longer have cattle.

I've probably hollered Soooak Soooak more than anything else in my life, but I learned a long time ago to not lie to them much. There 's almost always fresh mineral or a treat waiting. Sure wish my Mom and Uncles Holsteins would have been as responsive. Those spoiled buddies would walk you to death pushing them in from the loading pasture at milling time. And the traditional hog call here was Poohie! Now the language often used when driving hogs isn't allowed on this site.

Trained ours to a bucket of sweet feed and an AYEAH call. Between that and dad's broom handle training they were generally well behaved.

I no longer have any cattle. But when I did... even the horse I owned... I would call "COME BOSS" over and over again on the cattle or whistle a high pitched multi note schrill at the horses. Of course I would always have a bag of range cubes for the stock cows and usually had a mixture of oats, corn, sweet molasses, some other vitamans and minerals along with some Aureomycin crumbles for the weaned or feeder calves. If the cows or calves got out..... and that happened once in a while... I never had to chase them. Just called them and they came from wherever they were to my call for the treat. Horses always got a sugar cube or molasses and oats treat. Called the sheep we had to NANA NANA and some very green alfalfa.... always.

My G-Grandma would ring the dinner triangle for my G-Grandpa. By the time they got done with the meal the cows would all be lined up in the barn waiting to be milk. One day none of the cows were in the barn. The boss cow was caught in a fence and the other cows were lost without her to lead them. They just stood around lowing at her. My Grandpa went down and cut her out of the fence and she led them to the barn.

We duck hunt a small island and across the bay is a dairy farm... at dawn you hear the revving of a 4-wheeler followed by COME ON Girl... after about 10 minutes it normally turns into YOU STUPID SOB... and we giggle in the blind.

If they see my pickup, they pretty much swarm it until they figure out whether or not I have a bucket of DDG. If they are out of sight, it's HEY BOSS!
