Benn looking all over for the answer ..... no luck, yet.
I have a 11 lb LP tank that has expired, Mfg 2000 so it needs to be re-certified.
It looks relatively new and has the newer OPD valve. (like the tank in the pic)
The guy at the pump tells me that in order to re-certify it the VALVE has to be replaced because IT is over 12 years old.
I know the old valves are taboo and HAVE to be replaced with the OPD valves.
The tank, I understand, but never heard of the newer type OPD valves reaching any sort of expiration date. Other than being damaged or leaking.
Anyone here familiar with the specifics ?
Thanks

Was it me, I'd lose hat 11 lb'r and get a standard 20 and next time just do a tank exchange. Otherwise ,you'll need to find an RV/tank dealer that will do the work for a reasonable price.

Sounds like bs to me.
If you have a 250 gallon tank or larger (they have a dip tube) you can get an adapter to fill tanks off of it at home for a fraction of the price and no bs about recertifications also can fill the tanks with the old style valves.

I got a local place that fills for the $ of the gas, no prob there.
Recert is $10 ..... if the wingnut doesnt insist on the valve change.
I have several 20's, this one is for special purpose and fits perfectly. I'll keep it, thanks.

I'm sayin BS too. thanks. No bulk tank here.
The 20's are just an easy swap, none available for this little guy tho.
Still like to see or hear about the actual written rules.
I read all regarding all else, found nothing on replacing, or expiring a new style OPD valve.
I still think he's nuts.
Thanks folks,
smile

You can replace the valve yourself. Use up the gas and unscrew. Apply pipe dope(I prefer Gasiola for gas and rector seal #5 or blue monster Teflon for water) and tighten. They will have to remove the valve for hydro testing but they can reinstall the same valve. By the way hydro testing cost me $25 per tank here. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s $100 per tank. Larger fire extinguisher companies do the testing around my area.

Also that valve is sized for the tank or at least the float inside is. You can order online if you need to.

I have replaced a few over the years, old type to newer OPD's, but NEVER had to replace an OPD just because the tanks 12 years had expired.
They do the VISUAL test and recert for $10 here.
The Code of Federal regs / DOT also say that the valve must be put in by the recert specialist due to the special torque requirements. (duhh)

Anyway, the question is still out there:

Does the modern OPD valve have an expiration date ..... like the bottle does ?

Thanks JC

No one looks at the dates on the tanks around here, just refill them and charge you for whatever the gas costs. Until a couple years ago I didn't even know they had dates. I'd take to someone else and see if they don't just fill it for you. I have one of that size tank as well. Very handy to haul around.
