They CAN move anytime. Midsummer and midwinter least common new arrival times, spring most common for new arrivals, fall/early winter before ice not uncommon to have new ones move in.

Had some they wanted gone but would never wait for me to catch them. Every year right before season they would harvest and the beaver would abandon heir dam made of corn stalks and head back to the river.

I took a stroll along the Minnechaduza today and saw more beevee activity than usual. Time to build a feedbed.

Yes the beaver are busy this time of year but to be moving miles across hills with no water is not something I have seen before at this time of year. Unless the low water has pushed it out of a spot it thought was good in the spring.

Did you have a dry summer, and is the water coming up now?
Beaver do move in the fall usually out of lakes and bigger rivers where they go when smaller creeks dry up in times of dry summers.
When the fall rains come they move upstream and look for a place to make a pond where there is good feed for winter.
If they stay in the big rivers often their feedbeds will wash away in late fall just before freeze up
If they stay in some lakes they can get froze out if the lake drops overwinter
Sometimes beaver will follow a stream right to the headwater and wont find suitable feed or a place without an established colony. Then they will go overland to another drainage system.
Beaver are vulnerable when far from water especially where there are wolves around.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Boco we have had a dry summer here in dubrevil where I work but not so much as batchewana where I trap. I was out scouting beaver last weekend and if we don't get rain soon I will need to eliminate 5 or 6 ponds on my line because they will freeze out. I haven't seen water levels this low in 20 years. The beaver I saw this morning was on top of the water shed heading for the kabi River going your direction. Lol

That one year old was likely not alone. It was probably lagging behind Mom and Dad and both of the 2 year olds, who were heading for greener, wetter pastures.
Another possibility is that the clan got scattered by raviging predators due to not enough water to remain secure in the high and dry lodge.

when I used to do lots of bird hunting in the fall, I have seen beaver moving thru the wood's miles from any water? But there was water in the streams and creek, so it wasn't a drought that made them move also lots of food!!!

You already said it was on the way to work. Maybe it's workplace was not close to any water. Sucks for the beaver to have a job like that. grin

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
