The uses are usually as a base or as an ingredient in our case. We prefer the fat rendered from the skunk scrapings and not just the pure lean basically odor free fat. The lean meat element in the fat adds a nice mild food odor to the rendered fat after it has been worked down. It is like any rendered fat. It is very waterproof once it begins to stiffen in cold temperatures.
It will provide a grease like consistency depending upon the amount used and what it is used in. It will add some lower temperature tolerances to a product and viscosity keeping the product more workable. It blends nicely in most formulations. The midnight oil will add a nice touch of odor and a smooth grease like property to some lures and baits. A little can go a long way on small batch formulations.
If a "little essence" odor gets transferred to the scrapings all the better. It will mellow out nicely in that process. Gotta love those trace under tone odors. Time will teach and show those that work with such things of which I speak. The dark midnight color is our preference. If you get the opportunity to evaluate them side by side, you can be the judge.
Some like the pure clean rendered clear fat. That is up to the individual as to what they prefer and the intended use.
